Going to a Christian College that doesn't exactly share every view as me?

Hi, I'm in the process of enrolling in a Christian college. It is mainly Church of Christ, I believe. I've been going to a Church of Christ for a few months now but I'm not sure about some of their views.. I'm just wondering if this is a good idea? I mean they teach the gospel obviously. Has anyone else been to a Christian college that had some different views but still felt like they weren't being deprived of what they needed for their faith? Thanks.

You'll probably never find a college or a church that has exactly same view as you on everything. It's probably healthy that you have differing views on some things. Even if the college itself had the same views, you'd still have professors who have different views on some things and you'd still interact with students who have differing views on some things. Just make sure that you know what you believe and why you believe what you believe. Don't just go into college with this set of beliefs that are only yours because they are what you have been taught. Instead, ensure that your beliefs are your own. If you know why you believe what you believe, then everything will be fine. Your views may change on some issues, and honestly they probably will, but that isn't necessarily bad.

As long as they don't believe like your blood and turn evil or that you must do works to get into Heaven then you should be perfectly alright.

My impression of the Church of Christ is that they are very legalistic. To answer your question, yes - I have attended a Christian college that, looking back, involved men who tried to extend their authority beyond reasonable boundary and was blessed in spite of the ungodly ways.

Just because one man has had his head in the mouth of a lion and escaped unharmed... well, you get my point....

Recently I heard of a new book "Already Compromised" about how most Christian colleges (in the US) are not Christian in what they teach in the classroom. I think you should pray more if you are in doubt and if possible request a sample of their course work before you register.

I attend Point Loma Nazarene University, and I am a liberal, non-denominational Christian from the Vineyard church. In my experience, professors do not impose their denominational beliefs on us. What we need to realize, and the Nazarene professors here teach this, is that we are all brothers and sisters in Christ. Our differences are petty and insignificant. I wouldn't worry about it. It will be a good challenge for you and I feel that you will grow because of it. A different perspective and theology will challenge you to dig into God's Word and find answers for yourself.

Sit in on classes. I have heard awful things about some Christian colleges and I've decided that I will not attend one unless I can experience their classes. I was looking at three Christian colleges. They were all very serious ones when it comes to social conduct of students (no sex kissing beer late nights ect). I've sat in on classes in two of these colleges now (won't be sitting in on the third because a) it's in Missiori and b) they don't have a pre-law program and c) I've fallen in love and been pressed upon by God of Libery U.). So far I've found that if their social requirements are strict than their classes are really Christian in curriculum.

I had an interesting perspective on classes I've sat in on because I make sure to sit in on classes I've already taken. This allows me to a) compare it to my current school and b) to focus more on their inclusion of Jesus. I'm very impressed with both schools. Now one is very much in line with my views as it is a college run by Assemblies of God and I share almost word-for-word views as them. The other is a bit broader and I've not seen any problem thus far. Since I'm not going into ministry but into law I don't see this being a problem. If you were going into ministry than maybe you should be a bit more concerned but if not I don't see a problem.
