Hands inside pocket

It is really astonishing that some cultures find it very rude and offensive if you put your hands inside your pocket while speaking to someone else, especially to an elderly one.

What's your culture here?

The UK don't particularly mind that, however, arms folded (a defensive stance) isn't advisable.
I tend to have my hands in my pockets a lot - hey - keep them warm or loose them to a chilly wind (not a good excuse in sumner though, however I digress).

Psychologically, it is considered to indicate uncomfortableness and/or a lack of confidence. It will usually work against you on a date, or in a job interview.

In all truthfulness, a person looking for a job with my companies, walking in with their hands in their pockets, rated almost as low as a guy not taking his hat off, needing a shave, or wearing flip-flops . I usually didn't even seriously consider them unless they REALLY surprised me with something outstanding.

Don't think it matters in casual conversation in the US, but I could be wrong.

That's good to know.

People really should educate themselves on body language, how to read it and speak it to your advantage. :)
Amen to this. I have used such for decades......... and I don't even have to call it "discernment." LOL

It appears as the person is supercilious to others, which may not be received very well.

Interestingly, when you are comfortable enough with such behavior not to simply "react" to it, you soon begin to see how much just the opposite is true.
