Sources???
Wait. Stop. I'm not going to remember because I studied for myself and can't remember where I got half of what I know.

I never went to seminary or have a masters degree in anything.
You, and many others here, have degrees where proving every statement was a requirement. I know how but didn't bother with doing anything like that.
Not saying that your methods are bad or that your degrees are bad...just the opposite. But just that I'm an electrician... Construction worker... I'm not going to have the wherewithal to have a full on sourced debate on anthropology of the ANE.
I still want a subscription to JANES...just to read and research stuff...because I can. But to write and source my research, to me, isn't fun or what I have done.

We need guys like you to do the heavy lifting... But guys like me who love to put it together to tell stories are kinda needed too.

Jesus came to the house of a sinning tax collector. A "little despised" man in the community.

Paul has the best sight on this matter, for spiritual dissection purposes. I agree with John, that tax collectors were despised and still are, I believe. Not fond of them myself and keep a wide berth.

1 Corinthians 1:
26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:

The account of Zacchaeus ties in very nicely with Paul above on many counts. There is actually a lot more that can be said about the account that meets only the literal eye as well. The crowd blocking his sights, his diminutive stature, the sycamore tree, his desires to see Jesus, all bear meanings in the spiritual beyond the literal, as do the after effects of what happened.

Is it the tax collector you're not fond of or the office and authority they hold?

It's the criminals who run this asylum who are UNSEEN if you can manage to get there.

Deuteronomy 32:41
If I whet my glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me.

Most, when they think on Zacchaeus trying to peer over the crowd to see Jesus only see people. They seldom if ever see the other giants of 2 Cor. 4:4, Eph. 2:2 or the "real enemies of God in Christ" that stood in the way of the people of Israel and of Zacchaeus.

Unfortunate, really. It's far more interesting when we see ALL that were there and are still here. But then again that seems to be too big of a leap donut?
