Have YOU actually read the Bhagavad Gita? (Hindu Text)

Since there has been a lot of "heat" on the hellbound Hindus...

I am curious if anyone here has actually read for THEMSELVES the Bhagavad Gita, the central book for God - fearing Hindus....

In it you will NOT find....

1. How to worship animals and monkeys...
2. How to worship golden idols...
3. How to sacrifice your young virgin daughter for the gods...

In it you WILL find....

1. Intricate philosophy between the dialogue of Krishna and Arjuna the warrior.
2.The concepts of the Creator being the root of all things.
3. The illusory nature of material things.
4. Devotion and a pure heart for God being the Ultimate goal of the spiritual aspirant.
5. Seeking God in silence and reflection.
6. Selfless service for man and renunciation of selfish pursuite the highest goal.

So anyways, that is some of the main themes I have gotten out of the book from my many times reading it through.....

For all the scholars out there... Have you read it and what did you think of it?

If you have not read it and want more "ammo" to diffuse the Hindus ego I recommend Eknath Easwaren version the most.

If I spent all my days in the Bible I would still not have studied enough. I cannot see spending even one studying pagan text. I have read enough about world religions to know where I stand. I won't be delving into the writings of demons.

So I guess thats a no.

Thank you for being honest about it and admitting that you never looked into it.

Some would say they did read it and then condemn it when they dont even know anything about it......

I have to admit that I've never read the material. After going through your post I do need to admit that I am a bit curious about the foundation of the belief and the manor in which its adherents look at it.
Which translation would you recommend as being the best for someone who wants to get both a cultural and historical perspective?

By far the best I can recommend is this version....

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... s&n=507846

It is by Eknath Easwaren,

You can find it at Barnes and Noble or other bookstores....

It has great commentary on the philosphies present and is a great read for learning HOW to cope with a sinful nature and HOW to still the mind....

It changed my life!

Soma-Sight,
Thanks for the information. My current reading list should clear up in roughly a week. By then I hope that I'll have gotten a copy from my local B&N.

You wont regret it....

I went into this book knowing less than nothing on eastern thought and had a lot of misperceptions of what mystics of the east ACTUALLY believe/practice versus the idol worshipping, blood drinking, savages they are often portrayed as by evangelists.....

Easwaren also has the Upanishads and the Dhammapada that he translated which are also recommendable....

The Gita is the best "or my favorite" of these three treasures....

I have now read the Bhagavad Gita. It contradicts clear biblical teaching.

I reject it as a source of Godly wisdom.

I will stick to the bible...

BB,

Wow! You are a fast reader!

Did you take one of those speedreading courses or something?

Which version did you use? The Eknath version is my personal fav....

I have just read the Bhagavad Gita and it is not much of a read.

It was a waste of my time because not only does it lacks real wisdom it simply confirmed what I already knew about Hindu beliefs.

I skimmed through most of it's boring contents pausing and carefully reading some of the verses that caught my eye.

There are only 18 chapters composed of 700 verses in the BG. I read it over in a couple of days. It was not that impressive.

It really isn't necessary to read all of the book.

Look at it's description of salvation.

GRACE OF THE GITA

I promise the study of this sacred dialogue of ours will be equivalent to worshipping Me with knowledge-sacrifice. (18.70)

Whoever hears this sacred dialogue with faith and without cavil becomes free from sin, and attains heaven ¾ the higher worlds of those whose actions are pure and virtuous. (18.71)

Grace of God from the scriptures.

1 Corinthians 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

1 Corinthians 15:2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

1 Corinthians 15:4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Hinduism has a different god and a different message.

Your right Berean!

It has a VERY different massage!

If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.

What "massage" or verse are you quoting?

BB,

Deuteronomy 22:28-29 (New International Version)

28 If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 29 he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. [a] He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

Or how about this one BB?

(2 Samuel 12:11-14 NAB)

Thus says the Lord: 'I will bring evil upon you out of your own house. I will take your wives [plural] while you live to see it, and will give them to your neighbor. He shall lie with your wives in broad daylight. You have done this deed in secret, but I will bring it about in the presence of all Israel, and with the sun looking down.'

Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the Lord." Nathan answered David: "The Lord on his part has forgiven your sin: you shall not die. But since you have utterly spurned the Lord by this deed, the child born to you must surely die." [The child dies seven days later.]

Okay, I've reserved the Easwaren version at the library. Until it comes, I'll spend a little time perusing the version over at sacred texts...

Here is what the verses and the ones before them actually say.

KJV

Deuteronomy 22:22 If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall both of them die, both the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away evil from Israel.

Deuteronomy 22:23 If a damsel that is a virgin be betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her;

Deuteronomy 22:24 Then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour's wife: so thou shalt put away evil from among you.

Deuteronomy 22:25 But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her shall die:

Deuteronomy 22:26 But unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter:

Deuteronomy 22:28 If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found;

Deuteronomy 22:29 Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.

Verse 22:29 does not necessarily mean that he forcefully raped her. It might but I don't think so because of the words "and they be found".

They be found indicates that she may have consented.

Since she was not betrothed or married and the father was paid (a fine) and there would be what is called in the southern states a "shotgun marriage" and the man was not allowed to "put her away" for any reason as long as he lived.

The verses before may indicate that if she didn't cry out she was guilty of consent.

These verses certainly do not advocate rape or a "proper way" to go about raping virgins.

David had taken Bathsheba another man's wife and got her pregnant and then plotted and had the husband killed in battle to cover up his deed.

David was punished by the Lord for doing this evil deed. We must never assume that God is unfair. Evil is in this world because of sin. All of us have sinned including David's wives and sons. We don't know everything.

Babies die every day from illness. The illegitimate

We know one thing. God is not unjust.

He lovingly asks us to trust Him.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Look what David says about His son...

2 Samuel 12:22 And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?

2 Samuel 12:23 But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.
