Have you ever read this verse in the Bible?

That child who despises the goodness of their parents in how they try to bring up their child, then will that child pay the consequences for a rebellious heart within their lifetime.

Exo 20:12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Pro 6:16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
Pro 6:17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
Pro 6:18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
Pro 6:19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

My nine-year-old son found it and I feel silly

Then use that feeling of sillyness and shame to motivate you to read the bible.
Three suggestions.
1/ get an every day with Jesus and read the section plus notes as well as the additional passages list.

2/
Read through the bible in a year. It is four chapters a day, usually two old, one new and a psalm/proverbs. It gives one an over all view of biblical history and as the years go by and one is still doing the reading a good knowledge of the bible.

3/ Pick a book and read it chapter by chapter, together with a comentary on that book.

With all these methods have a note book to record what you read.
what struck you in the reading and why.
What you prayed about.
Having to think about what one is reading really helps one grow in Christ.
