It is not an advantage to conceive that the believer has a part in sin’s pardon (which is only a “heavy-laden” weariness), as possibly thinking that by “eschewing evil,” or any other work thought of to produce participation towards the forgiveness of sin, can contribute to sin’s pardon. Rather, the believer’s contribution is in being the recipient of not only forgiveness, but also of a “renewed” life which manifests or “bears much fruit” (John 15:8), of the Spirit, that is (Gal 5:22, 23).

For example, when a believer “reckons . . . to be dead unto sin” (Rom 6:11), he is not so due to the reckoning, but due to the Cross. The reckoning (having faith in a truism) simply acknowledges that which is consequential to redemption.

In short, an unregenerated individual will continuously need to be reminded concerning behavior, and the regenerated individual is ever mindful concerning behavior, due to the Spirit’s inward working (Gal 5:17), which results from the work of the Father (Philip 2:13)—all by and in the life of the Lord Jesus (Col 3:4).

It's by the righteousness of Christ that provides justification to all who will put their faith in him. It's a gift of grace that pardons us and the love in mercy that allows us to be reconciled back to him.
