Hello.

I don't know if I should call myself a Christian or not. What do you think?

I was brought up by Catholic parents, was baptised, taught dozens of bible stories at school, church, etc but I was orphaned when I was 10 and I was brought up by my grand-parents. They are lovely gentle, open-hearted people but they follow no religion at all and my Christian upbringing dropped away. We were given the option to continue going to church but because they didn't go to church, neither did my sisters and I.

Now in my late twenties I still say the occasional child-like prayer but I am not confident that the prayers go anywhere. I often wonder what my life would have been like if I had continued with my Christian up-bringing so I thought I may be allowed to hang-out here for a while and see if anything rubs off on me.

I tried going to local churches but found the whole process a bit embarrassing. They all seemed to expect me to be a 100% believer - when I wasn't really. I also found great difficulty with the 'holier than thou' types who seemed to think that they had some supreme right of authority over others and just treated me as a fool if I asked any questions. I just I hate that attitude and hope there is not too much of it here.

The majority of forum members appear to be from the US where Christianity is more prominent. In England, active Christians are increasingly rare, vocal Christians even rarer. Most villages don't even have a full-time vicar/priest/pastor any more. Our local church is only opened a few times when the travelling vicar calls. This may help you understand a rather different culture than you may be used to in the US.

Dear Isambard, welcome to CF.net. God knows your heart, and if you have ever believed, the very act of calling upon His name puts you once and forever in Jesus. Romans Rom 10:13-14 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?â€

Are you not sure? For conscience sake believe the following. Romans 10:9 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.†Then it is time to Grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord. 2 Peter 3:18.

It’s great to have you join us in fellowship in Jesus’ name. :wave

Hi Isambard, how are you doing? good to see you here; God bless His Word to you.

PS: Make sure you read the Bible every day; then you will figure more about God, His blessed Son the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, and yourself. Try reading John's Gospel, from chapter 1 onwards.

I've heard it said that in the UK people have often have the church without religion. In the US, people often have religion without the church. I guess the best of both worlds would be to find a church where many are sincere and kind.

:)

Isambard:

I'd recommend focusing your prayer on your needs. Pray that God will help you meet and get to know sincere Christians like yourself. As you begin to meet one after another, your trust in God will grow. You'll discover that he is there and he does indeed care. Please continue to pray and I'll do the same. Then let us know how he answers our prayers.

:)

Thank you all for your welcome. I look forward to getting to know you better.

How many members are there? Perhaps that should be - how many active members are there?

Hello Isambard and welcome to our little nook!

I can understand your delima and if you look real hard, you'll find the same types of issues in America that you do in England. As far as you being a "Christian", don't get hung up on any labels and just grow in the Lord. Many use the term "Christian" as a label to associate them with a particular church or denomination. Actually, "Christian" simply means, "One who follows Christ". By that, we mean that Jesus is our savior so we have faith that when we die, we know where were going. Also, while we are here on earth, we understand and seek to live the way God would have us, which is also found in the teachings of Jesus. Thus, we try to live the way of Jesus and we have faith that it's the best possible way to live.

To your point, I don't like it when some religious elite looks down on me as somebody lessor and I'm reminded that Jesus ate with prostitutes, tax collectors and other sinners. The ministry of Jesus was a ministry of repentance. Not to condemn those living in sin, but to set them free from sin, and show them a better way to live.

I look forward to reading more of your posts and welcome!
