History of blessing food

I always wondered where this idea came from. It's not strictly Biblical, it's not strictly literal either. It's a strange place where Christians say something completely different from what they do.

"Will YOU bless the food" Someone is asked.

If they do, they include something like "GOD bless the food"

If you ask them why that is done they say "to THANK God for the food", which some of the looser Bible translations say is what Jesus did,

If you are more strict you see that Jesus blessed GOD for the food, as is still done in many Jewish traditions to this day.

What? How, why? How did this whole thing come to pass? Why do we accept that this is the right way when it's not even grammatically correct between ourselves? Why do those who can see that it is not grammatically correct continue to do it that way?

Possibly along the lines of the following scripture. If it could be proven incorrect to its grammatical structure, would it be wrong to thank God for our food?
Mat 26:26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it . . .
One of Strong's concordance meanings of the word blessed here is:
1. to consecrate a thing with solemn prayer
2. to ask God's blessing on a thing
3. pray God to bless it to one's use
4. pronounce a consecratory blessing on

Rom 14:6 . . . He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.
Eph 5:20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
1Th 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

I've wondered the same thing myself. I do bless the food though, it needs all the help it can get nowadays. I bless God too for the meal and the faithfulness in providing for us. That way I cover all the bases.

I read somewhere that Jewish people say the blessing after they've finished eating and feel satisfied. Dunno if it's true or not...

Actually, "blessing" of food is Biblical.

1Ti 4:1-5 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by giving heed to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, through the pretensions of liars whose consciences are seared who forbid marriage and enjoin abstinence from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving; for then it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.

So, therein Paul confirmed the Christian practice of giving thanks and consecrating our food through prayer.

I'm pretty sure that the blessing of the food is linked to communion. Jesus said, take eat, this is my body, drink, this is my blood...ok so something supernatural happens when we speak these words. I don't think we get to see it, for it takes place within the supernatural (Kingdom) realm.

He also said, as often as you eat do this. So something really happens when we focus upon our Lord and obey Him about our sustenance.

If our words can change our wine or grape juice into Jesus blood, and our bread into His flesh...then of course the molecular arrangement is rearranged into an arrangement which is more beneficial to our bodies. He is the bread of life!

It came from here:
1Ti 4:1-5 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving;
for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.

I guess I fit under that "strict" category you spoke of, because I see Jesus blessing GOD for the food, and not blessing the food itself (as if that will do our meal any good!) We're supposed to bless God for providing us the food..... and that's exactly what we do in our home.

As to why people bless the food instead of the One who provided it to them, chalk that up to man's ever-fallible traditions, and his stubborn refusal to change something about himself that he had always done before.

Good morning, Jim. I can't understand how my post could be interpreted the way you seem to have taken it. Please read it again. I stand firmly by what I said. Have a blessed day!
 
Tradition and good reason.
1. TO truly thank GOD for providing.
2. To be thankful to GOD for all we have.
3. To teach our children to be thankful inall things to GOD.
4. Just to take time to fellowship with GOd and worship Him with THanksgiving.

I knew a youn preacher that often said many Pastors and Church people would have to answer to GOD one day for what they Pray for At the Table.
They Say "Lord Bless this food to the use of our Body"
Then when they weight 300 lbs they complain about the result.
God just gave them what athe asked for.
