Holy Lie

A little something to stir the convo:

2 Chronicles 18:19-22 HCSB

And the Lord said, 'Who will entice Ahab king of Israel to march up and fall at Ramoth-gilead?' So one was saying this and another was saying that.
"Then a spirit came forward, stood before the Lord, and said, 'I will entice him.'
"The Lord asked him, 'How?'
"So he said, 'I will go and become a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.'
"Then He said, 'You will entice him and also prevail. Go and do that.'
"Now, you see, the Lord has put a lying spirit into the mouth of these prophets of yours, and the Lord has pronounced disaster against you."

It appears here that God OKs a lie. What say you?

Didn't God lie to Adam, that he should surely die would he eat from the tree of knowledge?

He did die didn't he? Is Adam still alive? haha. He would have lived forever on earth till he decided to disobey God.

God cannot lie! Heaven and earth will fade away but His word will never fade away. He will push the two aside to make sure His promise is fulfilled! If God says the grass is blue, then lo' and behold, it will turn blue! He can't lie, because it would become fact =D

God did not lie. He did die...he entered death the moment he disobeyed. It was a spiritual death with a physical one to follow.

These instances found in the Bible and throughout history are known as moral dilemmas. The easiest way I've found to wrap my head around this is understanding the ethic of the greater good or the lesser evil. If you've been put in a position where you only have two options to choose from, and they are both evil, all you can do is choose the lesser evil. God honors that if that is all you have to choose from. It is still evil but God knows in your heart of hearts why you chose the path you chose.

For example, in WWII Corrie Ten-Boom was hiding Jews in her basement. When Nazi's knocked on her door and asked, "Are there any Jews here?" she said no. She only had two options, to lie or tell the truth. To tell the truth here would be a greater evil as she knew full well what the result of telling the truth would be. Also, saying nothing at all was not an option. To say nothing she knew was the same result as telling the truth. So clearly she was caught in a moral dilemma, a rock in a hard place.

Two evil options, to lie or to tell the truth. Which is the lesser evil? To lie.

The moral ethic I've shared here does not diminish the moral law that is so black and white. To lie is wrong, always. But God looks at your heart and weighs Justly the decisions you make and why you make them. Corrie had to make a quick decision. She did what she thought was the best option, the lesser of two evils, to lie.

If you look back at the events in the Bible (and others) with this in mind you should be able to see why God allows lying and sometimes even blesses people for it.

Whatever is but might not be is dependent on what is but cannot not be.

<dir>Rom 1:24

Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
Rom 1:25

Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
Rom 1:26

For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
Rom 1:27

And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
Rom 1:28

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; :chin
