Mary was of the tribe of Judah and the house of David the king.

Elizabeth was of the tribe of Levi and the house of Aaron.

How could they be related?

Lk 1:27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

Lk 1:5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

You are thinking way too modern and way too western. Joseph raised HIM as a son. That was defacto adoption. In that day, adoption actually changed your parentage. Example: When Alexander the Great was set to take over Israel, he chose not to and was legally adopted into the lineage of David, (possible as an adult also) which meant Menelaus was no longer his father.

Side note: The mother's lineage did not count for anything in that day and culture.

Mary and Elizabeth are related as cousins. Mary, from the house of David and the tribe of Judah, and Elizabeth, from the house of Aaron and the tribe of Levi, are connected through their families. According to the Bible, Mary and Elizabeth's mothers were related, making Mary and Elizabeth cousins, as indicated in Luke 1:36 which references their familial connection.

The lineage starts with Jacob as Elisabeth was a daughter of Aaron, Grandfather Levi, Great Grandfather Jacob as she was from the tribe of Levi.

Mary's father was Joachim, Grandfather was Barpathir as Mary's lineage goes much further back then Elizabeth's as Mary's Lineage is through David's son Nathan making her from the tribe of Judah.

Elizabeth was old in age past child bearing age believed to be fifty years older than Mary when you compare their lineage. In Jewish culture girls would marry around the age of 14 and Mary being engaged to Joseph would make her around 36 years younger than Elizabeth making them distant cousins, but yet cousins. Levi and Judah were brothers making them Uncles to Elizabeth and Mary.

No - the bible only says Elizabeth was from Levi, and that her and Mary were "near kinswomen," i.e. very closely related. HOW exactly is never said. But since relationships were thru the males, Mary was very likely also from the tribe of Levi.

Can you give chapter and verse about their mothers?
