“Do you not know that how who run in a race all run, but one receive the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.” (1 Cor. 9: 24-17) NKJ
The Winter Olympics is just around the corner. I love to watch the Olympics. I do love to see what people can do who practice and train hours and hours on end to become the best at their specific sport. They must discipline their bodies to become the very best at what they do. However, even in today’s world the crowns that they achieve are perishable. They receive gold, silver, and bronze medals for their achievements. These medals can be stolen or lost. I remember the Mohammad Ali threw his in the river because it didn’t mean anything to him at the time.
The medals won in today’s Olympics are worth something but when Paul was talking about a “perishable crown” he was talking about the crowns that the Olympians of his day won. They were only a wreath of leaves such as olive, laurel, or parsley, which soon withered and faded. Men trained and trained and for something the faded away in just a few days.
Paul pointed out in this scripture that we run the race for an imperishable crown. So, should we not run the race in such a way as to win? If someone can train a practice for years for a crown or a medal that will perish, why can’t we bring our bodies under subjection so that we can win the race for the imperishable crown?
Why do Christians get so sloppy with their Christian witness? We become overweight, ill because we don’t take care of ourselves, worry about everything, compromise our principles to fit into the world, and act very worldly. Why? Is it because we do not discipline our bodies, we do not transform our minds but remain conformed to the world, and we get all caught up in the world and forget who our Father and protector really is.
Christianity is not a kindergarten class where we sit in a seat and listen to someone preach to us. It is a war; we are in a battle. It is a battle that we seem to be losing because we aren’t engaging in the fight. In order to win we need a new strategy. What is your strategy for the New Year to become a more effective warrior for the Lord?
