“Be filled wit the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always, for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God.” (Ephesians 5:19-21) NKJ
Paul was writing to the Ephesians and admonishing them to speak to one another in psalms and hymns. He was also telling them to submit to one another in the fear of God. How could he write such a thing when he was in prison? Paul often talks about joy and making melody in your heart for the Lord when he was in prison. How many of us could do the same thing? I am sure that I would not be happy and giving thanks if I were in prison and I am sure the prisons of our day are a lot more human than the ones in Paul’s day.
My main concern for the church today is how we speak to one another. Do we speak to one another is psalms and hymns and spiritual songs? Do we make melody in our hearts to the Lord and each other? Do we submit to one another in the fear of God?
Frankly, I don’t see as much of that as I do brothers and sisters in the Lord that desire to argue with one another. They want to prove that they are right and the other person is wrong. Is it pride, is it anger, or is it something else that has brought on this onslaught of Christians fighting one another?
Have we forgotten that God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit, is the source of spiritual life? If the vessel is not filled with God’s Spirit something else will fill it. The lust of the flesh, the pride of life, and the world will fill us and we will forget that we are His. We need to think and act like we are His. That doesn’t mean that we won’t have disagreements at times, but we should always overflow with love for one another. We should pray for one anther, help one another, and speak blessings into each other’s lives. This is what it means to live a Spirit filled life.
