How many states are in the United States?
The answer is 46.
The question is why?

Four are actually commonwealths.

Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia...what's the other?

(Puerto Rico is also a Commonwealth, but not a state-equivalent Commonwealth.)

Blessings.

Kentucky is a commonwealth.

Actually, Rhode Island also has a little different name. It's Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, and it's our neighboring state. Otherwise there would be no reason to know, I guess.

...but there is only one Empire State, right? :)

My wife and I frequently go shopping in NY from Canada.

Blessings.

No peaking at what others said! I haven't scrolled down yet! Virginia is a commonwealth, not a state. Maryland is taxed so heavy and have more and more rights taken away that they are considered socialist and not states, and Texas thinks it is its own country. States are divided into counties. Louisiana doesn't have counties it has parishes. Thus is isn't a state. There!

Seriously.... Virginia is a commonwealth and I think Rhode Island is too, but I'm not sure.... I don't know about the other two states, but I believe I am on the right track.

Edit: I just looked at the other posts.... I was on the right track!

Yes, New York is the Empire state, but that's just a nickname. Where to you shop in NY? Close to the border? or the city? I was born in NYS and lived for several years in Buffalo, where we started our family.

Kentucky was once part of Virginia.
So when they became independent of Virginia, they continued to be a commonwealth.

We know the Buffalo area quite well. Cheektowaga has probably expanded a lot since you were there, maybe?

Cuba was thought to be the 51st state until Castro took over.
Puerto Rico was asked to be a state and it's citizens voted against it.

So when they because independent of Virginia, they continued to be a commonwealth.

Hmmm..... Technically that is true... Virgina was claiming everything to the Mississippi. However I didn't realize that was the reason Kentucky is a commonwealth. So what about West Virginia?

Umm...hill farmers up the mountains from the plantation owners, said: "We ain't got no slaves to 'defend', if you guys can secede, so can we..." Nostalgia for the old commonwealth wasn't a strong impetus for the mountain folk...

Cheektowaga probably has expanded, and probably other suburbs have as well. My wife and I started out renting on Main Street in Buffalo when we moved there in the early 70s and I was going to university. Later we bought a house in Kenmore, where we lived for several years. We left the Buffalo area in 1978 to be near my wife's family in Connecticut. We've been here since, but will be moving to the Rochester area later this year to be closer to our son and his family.

Hope it all goes smoothly for you guys when you move.

I guess you will have visited 641 Delaware Avenue in Buffalo? TR's inauguration place at the Ansley Cox Mansion, now a National Historic Site.

Blessings.

Yes, we have visited there. I'm actually very fond of Buffalo and go back occasionally to see how things are, especially the university, and I always take time to visit the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

Amazing that such a sturdy and old looking building such as the Albright-Knox was actually not there when the Pan American Exhibtion was held on its site. Another impressive building is the Art Deco city hall.
