'Counterfeit' prosperity gospel

'Counterfeit' Label Placed on Prosperity Gospel Message

A noted Christian author and teacher says the "prosperity" gospel is producing self-centered church members, AgapePress reports.

A recent cover article in TIME Magazine focused on the growing popularity of the gospel message that claims God wants all Christians to be healthy and wealthy.

But Ron Carlson, founder of Christian Ministries International, believes the "prosperity" message is not the true gospel. Carlson contends that a gospel that cannot be preached to every individual on the planet is a "counterfeit" gospel.

"I turn on television and I see some of these preachers ... [who say] that God wants you healthy, wealthy, and prosperous," he says. "I often wonder why is it they never go to the Cambodian border or the Gulag or China and tell those Christians, 'Don't you know you're the King's kid? Don't you know God wants you healthy, wealthy, and prosperous?'"

Carlson is concerned that such teaching reduces God to a servant's role. Carlson made his comments during a recent interview with Worldview Weekend creator Brannon Howse.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just time to say that I've had the 12 freeview Christian channels for 8-9 months

What the above criticises is a counterfeit of the Bible teaching encouraging hard work & folllowing God's principles, which He rewards with prosperity of heart, mind & soul, as well as health/wealth - see many Proverbs

Do readers who've seen Ken Hagin, TD Jakes, Joyce Meyer etc agree that the above distorts their teachings?

African & Chinese preachers DO encourage their flocks to claim God's promises

2 Corinthians 8-9 are clear that God blesses us so we can bless others, not to be selfish

Must go

Must yahoo Christian news - secular stations always seem to hide their heads in the sand & twist/distort things that are blindingly obvious to those who know & trust God & His Word  :o

The two I watch the most are the God channel and revelation TV, mostly because they show more UK content. I think one of the problems they have is that they simply do not have the money to produce programs like we are used to seeing today.

See how http://www.God.TV are now on 122m TV sets & 350m PCs worldwide?

How many of those screens are watched by family/friends/underground church gatherings?

They began just 4am-7am in UK & spread to Scandinavia, Oz/NZ.. EU .. India .. Africa .. began in USA on 1 Oct

& the prog I saw on Wed trailered all over USA @ Audacious .. Youth of Europe .. Easter People, Grapevine, AoG & Elim UK conferences .. The Ultimate Event .. Reinhard Bonnke in Lagos .. Rodney Howard Browne in NYC .. Joyce Meyer in Belfast .. Benny Hinn in London .. Hillsong big 10th ?Anniversary .. Soul Survivor .. Cross Rhythms .. Word Up ..

& their new USA base means live CCM gigs beamed worldwide from Jerusalem etc relays

Daystar reported similar spectacular increase @ Fall Sharathon

This thread has had hundreds of views now, yes? 8-)

Anyone researched audience figures for all 12 Christian TV stations, to campaign for inclusion in secular TV guides, who boycott 'em while publicising the tiniest minority interest stations whose audiences would be a fraction of the global Christrian TV/'Net outreach?

Time to brighten & warm up many folks' winter, yes? :multi:

Christmas with Billy Graham

The Billy Graham Christmas Special, airing December 2-10 in 150 markets across the United States and Canada, offers viewers the opportunity to remember why we celebrate Christmas.

The program will feature a 1979 Christmas message from Billy Graham in which he discusses the innkeeper who missed the first Christmas because he was too busy to recognize the Savior being born in his midst. Mr. Graham implores viewers to not make the same mistake.

“I’m asking you to let Jesus be born this Christmas in the central places of your heart and life,†he states in this classic address. “Let His birth and His presence fill your home, and flood your heart this Christmas season.â€Â

The cornerstone of the program will be Billy Graham’s latest sermon, given at Franklin Graham’s recent Festival in Baltimore. Also included are testimonies from two parents who, for very different reasons, are facing Christmas without their sons.

Musical performances are woven throughout the program with never-before-seen Christmas music videos from Paul Baloche and Erin O’Donnell, and songs from multi-Grammy Award winning artists Michael W. Smith and Randy Travis.

Visit http://www.billygraham.org/tv for the date, time, and station in your area.

I'm sure both http://www.God.TV & http://www.daystar.com will beam it worldwide

Tell your friends @ all the freeview Christian TV stations, yes?

Making Airwaves

Goodbye Old-Fashioned Revival Hour. Hello 'safe for the whole family.' Meet the company that's transforming Christian radio.
Madison Trammel

Forty years ago, Ardmore, Tennessee's Christian radio station would have been typical. Purchased by a neighborhood pastor, it aired church services during blocks of time the congregation could afford and Southern gospel music the rest of the week. As Christian Radio author Bob Lochte recalls, the few advertisements it garnered were from area businesses like the local Goodyear Tires outlet.

Locally owned and operated, such stations provided a modest service to their communities. But rarely, if ever, did they draw in large numbers of people or make a significant profit. Most struggled simply to remain on-air.

There were exceptions, of course. Some of the stalwarts of Christian broadcasting enjoyed tremendous success throughout the years. Aimee Semple McPherson's Los Angeles station rode the colorful evangelist's popularity in the early 1920s.

Charles Fuller's Old-Fashioned Revival Hour began broadcasting in 1937 and was syndicated to as many as 650 radio stations before the Bible teacher's death in 1968.

And Moody Radio in Chicago has broadcast professionally produced gospel programming since its founding in 1926 right up to the present day.

These trailblazers helped make radio an established part of evangelicals' media outreach, complementing books, magazines, tracts, and, eventually, TV and internet.

But they were unusual. Before the 1970s and 1980s, most listeners to Christian radio tuned in to stations and programming of widely varying quality and reach.

Those days are long gone. Today, popular Christian programs, such as Focus on the Family and Insight for Living, draw audiences of up to 1.5 million every show. The Barna Group estimates that 46 percent of Americans tune in to Christian broadcasting.

While other radio formats have been in decline, reports Lochte, the Christian radio audience has grown 38 percent since 1998.

Christian broadcasting has become professional, national, and, yes, even profitable. And the engine driving this transformationâ€â€indeed, the company more responsible for it than any otherâ€â€is Salem Communications.

Based in beachside Camarillo, California, Salem owns many of the frequencies that feature programs like Focus and Insight. It operates 97 stations, 61 of them in the country's top-25 markets.

By comparison, other significant Christian chains barely touch the country's largest cities, where half of all Americans live. Contemporary music's K-LOVE owns more total stations than Salem, but only 10 in major markets. Moody Broadcasting operates 31 frequencies, but just 3 in the big cities of Chicago and Cleveland. And Bott Radio, with 38 stations, holds none in major markets.

With far and away the largest audience of any Christian radio network, Salem's industry competitors aren't Christian broadcasters at allâ€â€they're the giants of secular radio, companies like Clear Channel Communications and CBS Radio.

Salem also syndicates its own shows, which air on more than 2,000 stations around the country. Popular Salem hosts include Bill Bennett, the elder President Bush's drug czar and author of The Book of Virtues; Janet Parshall, a former housewife turned political commentator; and Al Mohler, the president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Attuned to new media realities, Salem has led Christian radio beyond the airwaves as well. Beginning in 1999, the company purchased websites like http://www.OnePlace.com, http://www.Crosswalk.com, now among the most-visited Christian destinations on the internet, and http://www.Townhall.com, a clearinghouse for conservative news and opinion. It publishes seven magazines, including CCM Magazine and Youthworker Journal, and in 2006 it bought on-demand publisher Xulon Press.

All of this makes Salem's influence among conservative Christians "unparalleled," says Craig Detweiler, Reel Spirituality professor at Fuller Theological Seminary. Lochte agrees, calling Salem "the undisputed leader" in Christian radio.

Although few listeners know Salem by name, one thing is certain: The company dominates Christian broadcasting in a way that would have been unimaginable a generation ago.

"They're just doing it in a way that hasn't been done before," says Frank Wright, president of the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB). "They're breaking new ground."

This may help folk praying @ more Christian radio/TV for the new spiritually Dark Continent - EU:-

NRB Top Honors Recognize Salem Communications on Air and Online

The National Religious Broadcasters has announced its full complement of annual awards for 2006 including three top honors for Salem Communications media.

The 'Radio Station of the Year - Talk Format' goes to WAVA 780 AM/105.1 FM serving the Washington D.C. and Baltimore areas.

The 'Best Radio Talk Show' award recognizes The Frank Pastore Show on 99.5 FM KKLA in the Los Angeles market.

The 'Best Broadcast Website' honor goes to http://www.OnePlace.com, the largest provider of Christian audio content on the Internet today.

"These NRB awards constitute the Religious Broadcasting industry's version of the Emmys, so this is indeed a very high honor," said Joe Davis, executive vice president and chief operating officer for Salem Communications.

"To win three of them is not a small thing, especially when they represent a cross-section of what we do - best station, best talk show, and best broadcast website."
