I am nothing but a failure

12 years ago, I graduated from U.T.I. (Universal Technical Institute) with a degree in automotive. I originally gained an interest in the automotive industry when I took the automotive class at BOCES while in high school when my area representative for UTI visited our BOCES center and filled the young kids' heads with lies and fantasies about how they can make lots 'n' lots of money overnight "if they go to UTI!" And being the young and dumb naïve kid I was at the time, I fell for all the hype. 12 years after getting my degree, I am still paying off student loans for that school (just under $7,000 of debt remaining) and I am realizing just how much of a joke my career as an automotive technician really is. Every shop and dealer I have worked at since has either fired me because I was not learning fast enough to satisfy them or they were just satisfied with leaving me at a mediocre position where I just barely squeak by in life doing crap jobs that don't pay much of anything. Right now, I should be a master tech who can diagnose anything, but I am barely a mid-level if that and I have yet to make $40,000 in one year. I got married almost a year ago, and ever since I put my wife on my health care plan, it has been a struggle to earn over $300 weekly of take home pay. And yet we want to buy a house and have kids even though we can barely afford the rent on our 2 bedroom apartment with no kids. And needless to say that my wife someday being a stay-at-home mom is out of the question which will cause other Christians to look down on me as a "dead beat" because of the income I make (or the lack thereof). I don't hate the work I do, but the pay I make now in this economy will definitely leave my wife and I in poverty once we eventually have kids, and I don't see my career ever getting any better. I feel like I have wasted the last 14 years of my life on a career that is getting me nowhere. I need to change careers if there will ever be any hope of a financial future for my family, but the only way that'll happen is if I go back to school. But there are a few problems with that. #1; I still need my job just to survive, #2; I've never been good with academics and test taking (which is the #1 reason why I'm a failure in the first place), and #3; the only way I can afford to go back to school now is to take on more student loans which I can't do because "Dave Ramsey wouldn't do that!!!":naughty I am 32-years-old and not getting any younger and I am so sick and tired of being the failure that I am. I'm NOT asking to be the next Bill Gates or Donald Trump in the money department, but I sure don't want to spend the next 20+ years wondering how will I ever afford to feed my children. And I have no idea of what to do or where to turn. I am extremely frustrated right now about this. Is there any hope for me? What should I do? And please don't waste my time with sunday school answers like "pray about it", or "God will provide your needs", or "God will lead you to the right career choice", etc. I need real answers that will get me real results.

First of all, this viewpoint is not one that's going to get you where you want. You can't do it on your own. Period. You need God's help and His guidance. Until you accept and act upon that fact, you will go nowhere fast.

That being said, I encourage you to pick up the book The Resolution for Men. It's not expensive, and it essentially covers everything it means to be a man, a husband, and a father - including work and finances.

Now with that being said, you need to take that "I'm a loser" crap and can it right now. Remember, "Can't never could no nothing."

Are you in a good church? I ask because you obviously have some self-worth issues, and I would recommend counseling for that. On your tight budget, speaking with your pastor is where I'd recommend starting for that.

Since you brought up Dave Ramsey, let me tell you what I'm pretty sure he would - "My grandmother always told me there's a great place to go when you're broke - to work. Work like crazy people! That means your wife needs to get a job yesterday, and if you can't change your career right now, then get a second job. Go to McDonald's, a gas station, throw newspapers, deliver pizzas. Do whatever it takes!!!"

Almost 9 years ago when I first got married, I was in your shoes, but we actually had a baby. I was freaked. My wife couldn't work because we had an infant, couldn't afford child care, and our families couldn't really help out either. So I worked my normal job which was at a used car lot (hourly pay, don't worry I wasn't a jerk). Then when I got off from there at 5 I went to Papa John's where I delivered pizzas until about 11. Then I drove up to Nashville where I worked for a parking enforcement company putting boots on cars until about 5am. Then I got up the next day and did it all over again.

I did that for 3 months - and most importantly I stayed in prayer during that - and then a decent job as a restaurant manager fell in my lap. Today, I'm an Inventory Analyst working for the Nissan company, which also just fell in my lap. We're not rich by any means, and there are still times because of all the stupid things we did when we first got married that we live week to week. But we and our 3 kids don't hurt for anything. We have food, lights, a car, and clothes. We're good.

Get off your butt and make something happen! Yeah, you'll be tired, but you also won't be broke. Pray constantly and consistently, and God will bring you through.

God knows what you need, and He will supply it if you believe He will and if you let Him. If you want to take God out of this equation, be my guest, but the consequences are on your head. You're the head of your house. Your leadership and your responsibilities don't stop at money.

I understand your concerns, but you're putting way too many eggs into the Money Basket, and it seems as if that's what's ruling you. You can't do that. You cannot serve two masters (Matthew 6:24). You need to serve God. You need to realize you can't do it yourself. You need to rely on Him and trust in Him to take care of the things you can't. Until you do that, you'll be on your own.

And just to comment on another thing you said – If you’re doing the best you can to provide for your family, there’s not a Christian on earth who will think you’re a “dead beat”. If they do, they don’t know the Lord, so stay away. Besides, why should you care what they think anyway? Care what God thinks. Period.

wow. I can relate to some of that. I just was forced to transfer from fleet maintance to meter reading.while the pay is a pennies higher. I feel that I have now wasted what I spent on the ases I had and also the degree too.

The question you should ask yourself is do I have the natural talent for this job,if you don't you will struggle in it for ever....Mechanical ability is something one is born with, diagnostic skills can be taught but its the natural intuition that most often leads to a successful diagnosis and repair.....along with experience of course.

My dad told me long ago, that even a bad business is better than a good job.

Interesting Edward, the independent spirit of a man desires liberty from other men. But we should also remember as James wrote that all things should be subject to know and submit to Gods will above our own. Blessings...

Jas 4:13 Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:
14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

I think this is a wonderful opportunity for you to begin planning to have your own business.

In this day and age, there are many who would love to know a trust worthy and honest mechanic.

You should start out doing jobs on the weekend, until it grows into a full time business.

Plan to donate 10% of your proceeds to the Kingdom. Set that money aside from your money as God brings you clients.

You may want to sow your time into a person who desperately needs to get their car fixed, so they can get to work and support their family.

This is how I started in business as a plumber.

Now I have a several business's and a ministry that is able to bless many people as well as put God's people to work.

Be encouraged, you are not a failure.

Sometimes God lets us feel uncomfortable when He wants to bless us and take us to the next level.

I call this Holy Frustration!

God desires for you to prosper and to be blessed.

I promise His idea of blessing you with a business, is exceedingly abundantly above and beyond what you might imagine your business to be.

Its one day at a time.

Make a plan. Tell God you want to be a blessing to His Kingdom, and ask Him to guide you.

Be encouraged!

Even though I don't believe that it can be scripturally shown that tithing was ever about money (it was food), I can attest to the fact that God still honors his promise about tithing even with money because I have tested it and paid tithes many times and it has always ALWAYS been returned unto me. God is good like this. There is no way that you could ever out give the Lord! I also believe that if you were to donate your time to a needy one as JLB suggested, that God will bless you for this also, for the least that you do for others, you do unto the Lord himself.

I only speak from experience.

10% is a good place to start, as Abraham was led to.

I don't necessarily recomend giving to the local Church, all of this that is set aside, but ask the Lord to lead.

I give the Holy Spirit complete liberty over my finances, as I can attest to the fact that it was Him, who has caused me to prosper and it was with the blood of Jesus i have been purchased by God, so all that I make and that I have belongs to Him.

But getting started, I would suggest setting aside 10% and dedicate it to God, as Jesus did with the two fish and five loaves.

When we show God that we understand that we are not of this world, and we and our finances are in the kingdom of God, and not under the curse from the Garden, then He blesses us accordingly.

There is a certain principle to these things that I have learned.

Blessings to you, JLB

So you want straight answers and not just pat answers. ummm. You want God's way I assume.

First you have to shut your mouth and feeling sorry for yourself. Your a failure, you can't do this, can't do that. Jesus said you have what you say and believe. It's not a promise, it's a spiritual law saying that your mouth will keep you right where it says it will.

Mar 11:23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

I can't stress enough that whatever you say, You shall have whatsoever you have said. Everything you said is not even true, and Your the seed of Abraham, and have a powerful blessing on your life. Your blessed just for being Abraham seed and it's real. I have stood on that more than once when I personally came short of doing well. It's amazing once you realize what is already yours. The wealth, the health, the soundness of mind was all Abraham's and it's ours with no effort on our part but agreeing with it.

So before you keep opening your mouth........ check this out.

I did not go to college, I unlike you wasted my 30's drinking and doing bad stuff. We was broke and other broke people hung around us to feel better about their situation. That was until I got a hold of Jesus, and a bible in my hand. I started to learn not to go after money, or being financially secure. I learned to walk by faith and go after the plan of God. What do you want me to do Lord today is my same call to God that started years ago. Your things first Lord, then everything is added back to you in abundance. Seeking my own things, seeking to pay my own bills, even the heathen seek those things and it's not faith wondering where all the provision is going to come from.

The next thing is putting God first with my money. Tithing...........

JBL already covered this. I started to set aside 10% of everything that came in before looking at bills or anything else. God first, then my things. That is when the turn around started, and God introduced me into the Forex Markets. Wow, Me trading like smart folk? Turns out that Forex cost nothing to practice and as little as 100.00 for a mini account you can practice with real money. How hard can that be since prices move up, down or sideways. I am not a millionaire "YET".

Your heart, your mouth, and Who is first when it comes to money is the place to start. Being worried about your needs, your future is going to bring the world down around you. Don't do it.

Mike.

I think you have received some very wise responses on this thread and therefore I won't drill you with more. I will however state, if you want a new career. Get your CDL it can get you a paycheck in every State (if you decide to move). And the best part, it does NOT matter how bad the economy is. People still need their products. You still need food, water, bathroom needs etc. As long as there is a demand for products, those trucks will keep rolling. I don't want to give away my pay, that's not cool and been raised never tell about your pay. However let's just say that you can make between $1000 - $2000 a week in your first year. I been doing it for three years and LOVE IT!

Money sounds good right?

Will that fix your struggle with your finances? Probably, but let me be honest and give you the down side..

Keep in mine, you can earn up to $2000 weekly.. Very possible .. Ready for the downside?

Time away from home - you want good money, then those tires need to be rolling. When you get your CDL you will required to have two years of OTR (over the road) experience before you can get any job you want. Right now I no longer do OTR. I have a dedicated run where I'm home every night, my boss is the road. I don't answer to a boss; but it took me two years to get here. But you can then apply for Waste Management they start at $15.50 hr with full benefits, FEDEx, UPS, Coke, Pepsi etc. And these companies pay you GOOD! But are you willing to make the sacrifice? Is you wife willing?

Speaking of your wife, hey I don't know about your situation at home, but at my last company there were so many couples doing this (driving OTR) and bringing close to $5000 a week.. That's right $5000 a week. You go in as a team (you and your wife), you both get your CDL's most every single company will pay for it.. All they ask in return? A year with the company and it's paid off, you own NOTHING!!! If you go in as a team, when one sleeps the other drives and vise versa.. That truck never stops and neither do the miles and the money!

There was a poster of their top dollar trucking teams - in one year a couple made $150,000 by driving as a team. The next best team was $128,000 and as a team the smallest was $88,000..

Give you something to think about.

I got my start with Steven's Transport http://www.stevenstransport.com/

Swift will pay for your CDL http://www.swifttrans.com/

Pam will pay for your CDL http://pam.greatcdltraining.com/landing.aspx?source=GASTUECOMPJOBS&kw=swift%20transportation&gclid=CIPQkJGfr7cCFQdk7Aod9AMA0g

CR England will pay for your CDL http://www.crengland.com/driverjobs/free-cdl-schools (only require 9 months of employment)

The only thing these companies require, is that you give them a year of employment. And the best part.. It does not matter where you live.. They will get your butt on a plane and fly you or you and your wife out for your schooling (Paid)! At Steven's, they paid for everything, the motel was free, the flight was free. The only thing I had to cover was food and of course laundry detergent etc.

If you want to make good money, I'm showing you another way, but the sacrifice is time away from one another if she can't go with you.. But look at the future and finding that local job (like I did).

God Bless and good luck

It is an idea and a possibility that he go into business for himself. Perhaps he should pray about the matter and do as the Lord leads him to do. It may be that he would turn out to be a blessing upon his community? The other thing that my dad said that stuck, was don't sweat the small stuff, concentrate on doing good work. If you do good work, the rest of it will sort itself out as you go along.

I like the way your dad thinks and speaks, yes prayer is the sign of one who wills to obey then Lord.

That's awesome, you're probably right then (depending where you live), out here in Houston they start at $15.50.

I wouldn't leave my current job for 15.50, but if the local wm did offer 18 plus, I might be tempted. I say that as well slinging garbage isn't for the over 40. however, in collier county they have side loaders and front loaders. no slinging of trash at all.

It was just another option for him to consider. At $15.50 he will clear close or near to $500 weekly as opposed to $300 he is basically making now, but that would be in another two years minimum. WM requires two years of OTR. In your current position Jason, you may not feel it's a leap in the right direction, but for this man in his early 30's, it may be exactly what need needs..

actually wm doesn't start drivers , he wouldn't if they use rear loaders, he would be hired to sling trash. that is what my solid waste department does. the local wm and republic guys both use rear loaders. if they use side loaders then they train him and license him.

are you sure you are talking about waste management the refuse company?i have a cdl b and I know I could get a job there, in collier county.im also relating since in a few years I may have to work elsewhere.

ok, I think we are talking about two different areas of this company. im talking about the local garbage haulers and you are mentioning the other side where they travel. I have seen them haul materials from recycling on the interstate.

actually wm doesn't start drivers , he wouldn't if they use rear loaders, he would be hired to sling trash. that is what my solid waste department does. the local wm and republic guys both use rear loaders. if they use side loaders then they train him and license him.

are you sure you are talking about waste management the refuse company?i have a cdl b and I know I could get a job there, in collier county.im also relating since in a few years I may have to work elsewhere.

Yes it's Waste Managment Jason. I spoke with a recruiter back in January who wanted to hire me (two years after I put in an application in with them). I asked a lot of questions and they asked me a lot of questions. I turned them down at the time; but he gave me an open application status where I can come back and reapply and be considered for the position.

Again this is depending where you live Jason and depending if you are doing commercial or residential or commercial haul-away (construction sites). Here in my area of Houston, they have side loaders, others areas of Houston (south Houston) they sling trash. ALL commercial drivers use front loaders. In Albuquerque, NM there are no trash slingers. I never seen a trash slinger until I moved out here to Texas. Waste Management only uses side loaders in New Mexico and front loaders for commerical

Job Summary
Our Residential drivers are responsible for the collection and hand loading of residential waste, as well as the transporting of this waste by a front-load or rear-load truck to a landfill site. Our non-experienced drivers will be training side by side with our seasoned drivers to gain experience. Employment generally begins performing the helper role while training to become a Driver. The Driving position is not guaranteed but is likely with acceptable work performance and the completion of training.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Note: The level of physical effort may vary from site to site and in some cases be greater or lesser than documented here. Often, these waste receptacles have no wheels or handles for maneuverability, and the driver must have the physical strength to adjust accordingly. This physically strenuous position involves mounting and dismounting the truck between 800 and 1000 times every shift. In addition to these duties, pre and post trip vehicle inspection is required. Required work hours may be up to the legal limits allowed and may require weekend and/or holiday work. Work hours will vary by route. Drivers must be able to read and understand a map, complete daily driver logs as well as pre and post trip truck inspections. I wouldn't work for the local wm as well they seem to run through people, however. that may not be the case for jahjah, that site also has jobs for his skill set already if he is able to work on diesel engines and hydraulics.

ok, on trash, some cities also hire for this and use front loaders and side loaders. the city of ft.pierce does. while where I work doesn't. we have the old school way of doing it.ok we are on the right sheet of music.
