I don't know the answer to this

One thing I've never understood is you obviously have to accept Jesus as your lord and savior and believe in him to go to heaven. But for example America wasn't discovered until 1400's so the Indians who lived before we came knew nothing of the story of Jesus. So since they did not accept him because they did not know does that mean they will go to hell? I don't understand

Jmr, I'm just a lowly forum member, but I'd invite you to introduce yourself on the New Member forum.
Happy you're here. :yes

Your question can also be applied to people living in the far reaches of the earth. Most Christians agree that God has revealed Himself through His creation and other means to draw them to a knowledge of Him. While Jesus and His sacrifice might not be known (except with dreams for example), the Son has always been with the Father. They can respond to the revelations God has given them.

I wouldn't say people who don't know about Jesus will go to hell. God is just and right and will use His wisdom and grace in His own way.

Then why send missionaries to them, one might ask. Because there is great joy in living with the Truth now in addition to eternal salvation. People who live without knowing the Lord, don't really know what living is all about. It's awesome!!! And we need to share the importance of accepting His revelation and the fullness of Jesus. :amen
