I knew this was coming

I need struts at all 4 corners, and I am thinking about doing it myself, I should buy the tool to keep for this and the future, or rent one. I really don't feel like doing this, but they charge hundreds of bucks to do it. And I am good at this stuff so I might as well save the money, but I just don't feel like getting under cars like I use to when I was younger. But winter is fast approaching in Philly, so I better make up my mind fast. And the strut on the rear passenger side is broke, it does not work at all.

on the escort, the rear is easy, the fronts you will need that spring compressor,

i havent look at the rear struts on the escort.

do you have a vise?

Yeah the Escort, I think you have to use a compressor on the back too, but I am not sure yet, I do have the Haines repair manual for that car. I also am hearing my rods clatter like when you over heat, my temp gauge says normal the fluid level is right, I do need a vacuum hose, I do know that poor vacum can cause a care to over heat, hope that is not the wrist pins, or a bad piston connecting rods. The darn thing had great power, and when you go up to around 30 or 35 the clatter goes away. I have to finish googling that problem.

engines cant overheat from poor vaccum to my knowledge.

I just did a little google

There are many different reasons that can cause an engine overheat, but they all have in common three aspects. The three aspects which all engine overheat factors have in common are that they cause that the heating system can not get rid of heat, they cause a loss of coolant or they directly cause too much heat in the engine.

One first problem which might be the cause of an engine overheat is a problem with the radiator cap and the pressure it holds. If the radiator cap does not hold pressure correctly then coolant could boil and therefore the engine would overheat. Another reason might be caused by thermostat failures; it is recommendable that you check it.

The car engine might also overheat due to coolant leaks such as those from the radiator, the hoses, the water pump, the freeze plugs or any others. Also, problems in the water pump could be the cause and therefore you should check it and replace it in case it is needed.

Some other reasons by which the car engine could overheat are problems in the exhaust system which you can discover by checking vacuum readings, pipes and converter. Besides, you should also make sure that the radiator hose has not collapsed and the ignition timing is working properly.

You should also check the electric cooling fan by making sure that the fan motor, the relay and temperature are correct or otherwise it could cause the engine to overheat. Besides this, you should also check the radiator in case there are any debris in it as well as you should check its hose in case it has collapsed.

It is also recommendable that you check the antifreeze concentration which should be 50/50 in order to be correct, otherwise it could cause the car engine to overheat. If you do not find why your engine does overheat, you should ask a mechanic or an expert for advice. You should not try to fix this if you do not have the proper tools and general car knowledge necessary for it.

the exhaust effects vaccum , but that is more noticable as in a power loss. it would take clogging up the tail pipe to get that effect.

not on obdII those are going to cause a loss of fuel mileage but that wont be much, as the ecu sees the bad one and plugs in a calabrated value that isnt that far off.

usually the upstream ones are the ones that go bad not the ones after the cat. if both says the same thing and move the same then the cat is bad.

Well Jason 1 or both of them are bad I am getting poor gas mileage, and the check engine light comes on, and I have to unhook the negative battery cable to clear the code. I took it to AutoZone and and the code is the same as the spark plugs. But what ever that rod clatter is, I have to figure it out. I want this car to last until the spring and I
am going to get another car.

what year is that car? the dead miss causes the light to flash, did you see if it has a dead cylinder by the old pull the wire and noting the rpm difference?

I have not did that yet but I have thought about doing it. but what ever I do I have to start now, because you know how cold it gets up north.

Yeah I put a up stream O2 on it and the check engine light went out. But now it has been sitting because the air conditioning compressor froze up and wrapped the belt around the crankshaft pulley. Now I can get a bypass pulley to put in place of the air conditioner, but it is to cold in Philly to lay on the ground, unless I borrow my dads creeper. And also that compressor was creating a lot of drag on the motor. But before then a hose join blew of of the evaporator and blew Freon all over the engine.
So what I am going to do is fix the car and use it for a work car. Oh and Jason it is a 98.

be sure that you flush the system, and use mineral spirits to clean it out and also use brake clean to clear that out when done, when you do that you will see why.

black death is very real thing and you may have to replace the condensor.
that is if you cant flush it.

Jason I don't know if I want to put all that money into that car man, the freon incident went down in September and all I did was wash it off of the engine.

well then dont fix the ac. if dont replace the condesor or flush the system thoroughly the new compressor wont last at all.

black death is the nylon reed valves that fall apart and move around in the system they usually clog the orifice tube and starve the compressor of oil.

But really at this time I am undecided about the car, I do all my own work, but I feel like doing it, like when I was younger.

You are right Reba, I have been staring at that car sitting there for 3 months, been going over to my moms house and borrowing her car. But when I was younger that car would have been running 3 months ago, I just don't feel like that anymore, but sometimes I have my moments and don't mind doing the repairs, but not like I use to. But rather than pay 800 bucks to somebody else to put a 80 buck part on, I just ain't gonna do that, I will fix it myself. Now if it is a new car I will only do so much, I will let the dealer do it.

When the weather clears .. the sun is shinning ground is not so cold. put on a pot of good coffee some old rock and roll on the radio go back in time and get'er done! You can do it sure ya can save that $$$$ What ever ya do do as to the LORD??? :yes

I know i have the broken parts off my Polaris when the income tax return gets here i will buy the parts about $700+ i hope that is all it is my job is just R&R not anything like compressing springs .. I will put the parts on the 'quad' but HAVE to have DH tighten the bolts age has got me....
