I've been distant from God flow several years, but am now trying to find my way back to him. I'm not new to praying, but I'm new to trying to hear what he's telling me. I'm struggling to figure out if what I'm getting is from him or just my mind coming up with things I want. I'm currently dealing with major relationship issues. I want to try and fix things, but it's not clear she wants to. I prayed and asked what I should do. I stayed silent in prayer hoping to hear something. The only thing I got was an image of a battleship, which is a very unusual thing to just randomly come into my mind. So I'm wondering if that is some kind of symbol meaning I should fight to save this relationship.

Welcome to the site.
What are her views on God?
If you were away from Him for so long, what is her status with Him?
Start there.

Uh huh... well that's what that could mean, yes...

Pray He gives you more dreams and images. That will fill out the story.

God bless and welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forums. I would suggest that you read the Bible and ask God to help you understand it. That is by far the main way God speaks to us. That is where we get wisdom for dealing with life’s issues.

The only way to go to God, is when we have God reaching out to us, because He finds His lost sheep, He is their Shepherd.

The good Shepherd layed HIs life down for the sheep, and did not flee when the wolves came for the sheep, but all who do not care for the sheep flee, ( everybody who was before Christ.)

The good news is, that the sheep do not hear the voice of strangers. ( God is against the false shepherds and against the goats)

Ezekiel 34:11 For thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out.

Zechariah 10:3 Mine anger was kindled against the shepherds, and I punished the goats: for the Lord of hosts hath visited his flock the house of Judah, and hath made them as his goodly horse in the battle.

John 10:11-18 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.

Matthew 25:32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:
33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

The goats are cursed, who speak and do not do what they say.

During them saying and not doing, they make merchandise of you with feigned words. ( many follow that subtle way of the false teachers.)

They speak great swelling words of vanity, promise you liberty, and they are secretly servants of corruption.

2 Peter 2:1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

2 Peter 2:14 Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:
15 Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;

2 Peter 2:18 For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
19 While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.

The first thing one learns in a relationship is the name. God's name is revealed in the English Bible to be Jehovah. Most versions have it at Ps 83:18. Pray to Him using His name and ask Him for understanding, and be willing to listen. If you are sincere, He will see to it, you have the opportunity to come to know Him. Make sure you approach Jehovah through Jesus Jn 15:16

I think it might help you to read the following short story:

Also, God doesn't speak to us in a way that leaves us uncertain and wondering. He is not the Author of confusion. If you look into the Bible, you will find no instance where God communicated directly with someone in a way that was not made crystal clear. He used a burning bush, visiting angels, a talking donkey, a disembodied hand writing on a wall, visions, dreams (with an available interpreter), an audible, out-loud voice, and so on, to get His message across. And even when the person didn't want to know what God had to say, they could not escape His message. Nowhere in the Bible, then, will you ever read of an occasion where God failed to communicate clearly with someone to whom He had something to say.

Psalms 1
Psalms 119
Matthew 4:4
2 Timothy 3:16-17
1 Peter 2:2

In an effort to make sure we are well-guided, God has given to us His word, the Bible, that is filled with a revelation of Himself, with spiritual principles, wisdom, and commands, and with a multitude of examples of His truth at work in the lives of His creatures. He intends that we should know His word very well and apply its principles, wisdom and commands to our daily living, using His eternal truth to navigate through our earthly life in a God-centered, Christ-honoring way. Strangely, it is often those who have given the least time to a careful study of God's word, and to living daily in His truth, who are wanting a special sign, or "leading," a specific just-for-me indicator of how to proceed. Though they've been largely ignoring God's special revelation of Himself and His Truth in Scripture, they expect Him to point out exactly what steps to take in their circumstance of uncertainty. But if they can't be bothered to know and live in the directions God has already given to them in the Bible, why should they think God will give them more direction? Well, He won't. Only in the midst of knowing and doing what God has already said to do in His word will the more specific will of God just for you come into focus. Any other approach to discerning His will is superstition and guessing and fertile ground for self, and demonic, deception.

You want a "fixed" relationship? Put God at its center. He is the "Fix" for human relationships - especially the marriage relationship.

Hi tryingtofindgod and welcome to CF :wave2

It is interesting that you saw a battleship as it could possibly mean the battle that is raging in you to know God and Jesus in a more personal way as Satan is wagging war against you to pull away from God. This battle is also within you and your girlfriend and with that you just need to sit down and talk with her to sort out things.

Many times it helps to find scripture for what we deal with that speaks to our situation. Example would be to use Google or whatever search engine you use and ask for scripture that pertains to your situation and then search the scriptures that are given as the Holy Spirit will lead you through them to help you learn.

If we as sheep try to find our way back to the Shepherd, the first to know is how many wolves are out to devour you.

As they are wolves in sheep's clothing, they are easy to spot, they never agree to what right warning God gives of them wolves, as they are them.

Here is the warnings again:

Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

Acts 20:29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.

2 Peter 2:13 And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you;

Jude 1:12 These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

Plainly put, if she doesn’t want the relationship, you need to surrender it up. She has a choice same as Rebecca had a choice. God won’t violate her free will. So surrender it up and focus on obeying God in other matters in your life. Sounds to me like to want Him to tell you to not let go. Unless you’re married, she’s free.

Welcome to the site. I would study the bible. Start with genesis the beginning. Romans chapter 12 and ephesians chapter 3, body of christ has different functions. They have different gifts and abilities. Some are good at making money and helping the poor. Some Christian people are evangelists or teachers. It depends on the gifts God endowed you. There's promise land in Christian people future. Its kingdom of God. Second thessalonians chapter 2, the son of perdition, satan, comes 6th trump to Jerusalem, impersonating jesus. In his role as antichrist. I would stay focused on Jesus and resolve your relationship as soon as possible. We're getting close to antichrist.

Pride is the spirit of antichrist, along with the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, as all that is of the world is not of the Father, and the world passes away with its lust.

What God tells us is very different to what the antichrist tells us, the message of God is to not hear the pride of man.

1 John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
