The WORD represents Jesus

When John penned John 1:1, I believe that what he was trying to do was to show that this same person, Jesus, who they saw walk the earth, was the same person who they knew to be God in the Old Testament. Do a search on "The Word" in the Old Testament and you will find many times that the Word came as a person and talked to people face to face in the Old Testament. For example:

1 Sam 3:21
21 Then the LORD appeared again in Shiloh. For the LORD revealed Himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.
NKJV

2 Sam 7:4-6
4 But it happened that night that the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying, 5 "Go and tell My servant David, 'Thus says the LORD: "Would you build a house for Me to dwell in?
NKJV

And one day we will be judged by the Word:

Jesus said, "He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my Words, hath one that judgeth him: the Word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.

For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say and what I should speak.

And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak." John 12:48-50.

The Father gave Jesus a commandment, to speak, only, what He gave HIm to speak.

We should follow His example - speak God's Word, only - no more and no less.

Amen! :D So don't listen to Satan who tries to tell you through false teachers that the bible is not the only infallible truth, that you can change the bible, or interpret it any way you want. That's Satan at his best.

Where is the verse that says the Bible is the only infallible truth, Heidi?

It is used in the old testament as the word of god, the writer of the books of john delibertaley used the word as a symbol of jesus to convert jews.

In the OT, we actually see the "Word of God" as communicating in real time discussions with individuals and is acknowledged as God in the OT. So I would go further and suggest that the Word of God is not a symbol of Jesus, - it is Jesus. It is a title of Jesus just as much as the Son of God is a title of Jesus.

When Peter, "lovingly," told Jesus, that, He didn't need to die upon the cross, Jesus looked at him and said, "Get thee, behind me, Satan!"

When James and John wanted to follow Elijah's example (denominational precedent?), and call fire down from heaven upon the Samaritans, Jesus said, "You know not what spirit you are of!"

When Jesus said, that, one of His disciples would betray Him, they did not know who it was. Yet, Satan filled the heart of Judas and he betrayed the Lord.

The greatest deception is that which is the closest to the Truth.

These disciples were with Jesus 24/7, yet, when they trusted in their own understanding, became tools of Satan, who was attempting to thwart God's plan.

So, who do we think, that, we are, with our own traditions and opinions?

Are we greater than our Lord Jesus Christ, who, only, spoke the Words the Father commanded Him to speak?

I doubt that anyone here would suggest that they are greater than Jesus, but I am unclear why you raised that comment and how it fits in with the overall thread. Could you clarify?

I related the story of the four disciples to illustrate my point. They were with Jesus for years, yet, when they trusted in their own understanding, became tools of the enemy.

Let's be realistic. If we were there, when Peter, James and John offered their suggestions, we, probably, would have agreed with them - but, Satan was speaking through them!

Jesus limited Himself to speak, only, the Words, that, the Father instructed Him to speak. He is our example. If He limited Himself to total obedience to the Father, we should limit our discussions to Scripture, alone, and not interject our own opinions and traditions.

"He that abideth in Him, ought himself so to walk, even as He walked." 1 John 2:6.

Jesus said, "But I say unto you, That every idle Word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by the Words thou shalt be justified, and by the Words thou shalt be condemned." Mt 12:36,37.

Very Sobering Words for us all.

The question is, what does this have to do with the fact that Jesus is called "The Word".

The Lord God Almighty calls Jesus, "The Word". He is God's living message to man.

Jesus said, "...of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh." Lu 6:45. God spoke His message through His Son. And in the same manner, what we say, indicates who we are.

That is why we need to search the Scriptures, daily, to see how He walked, and what He said. We are to imitate everything that He did, as He was/is our example in all things.

If we are born again, He lives within us. To walk as He walked, we need to die to self, and allow His Spirit to be released through us - that is what "walking in the Spirit," is all about.

Exactly! Amen to that. Except I would add that if we are walking in the light of love that Jesus taught, the Spirit of God will dwell in us, even if we are not born again as yet.

What is the love of God?

We cannot trust in our own hearts, we were born sinners:

"Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths. For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her. Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death." Pro 7:25-27.

Jesus said, "If ye love me, keep my commandments." John 14:15.

"By THIS we know that we love the children of God (greatest commandment #2), when we love God (greatest commandment #1), and keep His commandments: and His commandments are not grievous." 1 John 5:2,3.

"And THIS is love, that we walk after His commandments." 2 John 6.

Only those who are, truly, born again and have His Spirit within, can, truly, love God and others.

Careful here: In the beginning was the Word who was Christ, not yet Jesus.

Whoa - care to validate that claim from scripture? Where does scripture say that Christ was, at one time, not Jesus.

Jesus is His name, "Christ," His title: "anointed one."

But there were, several, pre-incarnate appearances in the Old Testament.

Yes, I agree that there were many pre-incarnate appearances, but what has that to do with your claim? You have not yet shown that Jesus and the Christ were not one and the same throughout pre-existent eternity.

It seems to me that there is an unspoken assumption that you are making which is drawing you to that conclusion. Perhaps if you could clarify as to how you make the linkage between the pre-incarnate Christ and John 1:1, it would help me understand where you are coming from.
