Is gluttony a sin?

Yes.

The Word tells us to be content with what we have. Gluttony is a form of coveting. Greed.

Hebrews 13
5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
.

Yes it is.It is a sin that Christians like to ignore.People like to point their finger at those who smoke or drink and condemn them with no though to gluttony.
Proverbs 23:20-21
Proverbs 28:7

You might be surprised my friend.

i've been surprised a lot in my life; starting with "SURPRISE! SALVATION! "

It's hard to tell from people's words if they eat more than they should even. But it is not nearly so hard to see if they are greedy from their words, when they admit it.

every form of greed is sin also. it is much much more common than gluttony. (I think).

1 Corinthians 5:11
But now I am writing to you that
you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.

Do you think this verse also means these people shouldn't be allowed in church unless they repent and stop doing these things? It seems like if these people are going to church that would be considered associating with them

the english in this case is basically correct. you read it right. the Scripture says that the church should put out the wicked ones from their midst. it is simple to read and to understand, but churches that want more members instead of God's blessing and holiness let almost anyone stay.
not too many churches obey God's Word in this, as far as I know.

1 Corinthians 5:13
Amplified Bible (AMP)
13 God alone sits in judgment on those who are outside. Drive out that wicked one from among you [expel him from your church].

And just how does one determine if a person is greedy. Most people do not go around announcing that they are greedy. I don't think that is a put out of church sin. That seems to be resevered for things like adultery and other sin like this, violence, that type of thing.

Or are you referring to the OP, that is about gluttony. Should we put fat people out of the church?

MY DEAR WORMWOOD,
The contemptuous way in which you spoke of gluttony as a means of catching souls, in your last letter, only shows your ignorance. One of the great achievements of the last hundred years has been to deaden the human conscience on that subject, so that by now you will hardly find a sermon preached or a conscience troubled about it in the whole length and breadth of Europe. This has largely been effected by concentrating all our efforts on gluttony of Delicacy, not gluttony of Excess. Your patient's mother, as I learn from the dossier and you might have learned from Glubose, is a good example. She would be astonished - one day, I hope, will be - to learn that her whole life is enslaved to this kind of sensuality, which is quite concealed from her by the fact that the quantities involved are small.

But what do quantities matter, provided we can use a human belly and palate to produce querulousness, impatience, uncharitableness, and self-concern? Glubose has this old woman well in hand. ... She is always turning from what has been offered her to say with a demure little sigh and a smile "Oh, please, please ... all I want is a cup of tea, weak but not too weak, and the teeniest weeniest bit of really crisp toast."

You see? Because what she wants is smaller and less costly than what has been set before he, she never recognizes as gluttony her determination to get what she wants, however troublesome it may be to others. At the very moment of indulging her appetite she believes that she is practising temperance ...; in reality ... the particular shade of delicacy to which we have enslaved her is offended by the sight of more food than she happens to want.

I think we are getting off the OP.Greed is a whole different thread.

There are some who believe that overweight people are in a constant state of sin because of their weight. They associate gluttony with being overweight .

Maybe that's because Jesus was accused of being a glutton and a drunkard.
Luk 7:34 the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and ye say, Lo, a man, a glutton, and a wine drinker, a friend of tax-gatherers and sinners;

and the root word for glutton is phago which means to eat. (literally or figuratively)

I don't think they were saying that Jesus was greedy.

There are many different reasons for someone being overweight. It is not always overeating. When I could not even get off the couch and walk over to the washer and dryer I was so tired I knew I had a problem.I told my doctor that I must be depressed.Thank God he was good and very thorough. He gave me a drink of water as he felt around my neck.He said "Kathi there is something on your thyroid".It was big.I was put on medication but in the next year I gained 125lbs.I went from a size 6 and never having to watch anything I ate to shopping in the "big womens" section. That is the most humbling experience that anyone could ever go through. My husband left me for someone who was very skinny. My endocrinologist said "Kathi it will come off but very slowly. At this point you don't have a metabolism".
I have the upmost respect for people who are overweight.I would never point my finger at them.

look up the effects of soy flour, (very bad for thyroid unless estrogen is needed. hurts 1 out of 4 people.), and iodine (your doctor should test and help get this if needed) , and vitamin E (helps thyroid over 90% of the time. 'helps' , nothing more, nothing less).
all of these have been very well known for decades - E and I since before 1950; soy flour since about 1960.
you probably already know about msg and the other name(s) it's under. (avoid, obviously)
and
last and simple and nice and helpful : apple cider vinegar, raw, organic and natural digestive enzymes. just to make up for what is not in our food supply anymore. the helps are sometimes / often way way beyond expectations. sometimes not.
