Is it a sin to draw pictures of Jesus?

Hey All,
Of course not DoaWK1992. May I ask, where did you get the idea that drawing Jesus was/is a sin. Google Jesus statue San Paulo, or Jesus paintings Italy to see some of wonderful renditions of Jesus art. Draw away.
May God bless,
Taz

Exodus 20:4-6 "You shall not make for yourself a carved image any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them."

Exodus 20:4-6 "You shall not make for yourself a carved image any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them."
Why do you have an avatar of the likeness of something on the earth below?

I don't know what you're talking about what's wrong with my profile?
You quoted Exodus 20:4 above. Did you not read it?

""Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth."

You have an image of something below the heavens, namely something that looks resembles a man above your screen name.

oh my bad, apologies

I'm not writing that to get you to erase your avatar.

Exodus 20:4 is not a blanket prohibition on images because a few chapters later in Exodus God instructs the making of images of things in heaven (cherubim on the ark), on earth (pomegranates, palm trees), and under the sea (the big dish under the sea).

In the Old Covenant, Israel simply heard a “voice” but “saw no form” (Deut. 4:12), and that’s why she was forbidden from making and worshiping images of God. Israel could have “graven tablets” so to speak to record the Lord’s voice (Ex. 32:16), but not “graven images” to record His form. So what changed?

---> God became man.

Hey All,
Thank you doaWK1992. Now I understand.
When trying to figure out what a particular verse means, sometimes it helps to read the verse before and after it. That will help you you understand the context . (Context means - the circumstances that shape the setting for an event, statement, or idea, so it can be fully understood and assessed.) Let's try this with your verse. I am going to use Exodus 20:3-6. I am doing this because because between the two periods of verse 3 and 6 are the two related statements.

Exodus 20:3-6 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

Verse 3 tells us the command. 4 and 5 show us the why and consequences of those who worship the graven image. (A graven image is an idol or representation of a god used as an object of worship.) 6 gives us the consequences of those who obey God's command.
Now we have understanding.
Were you going to worship these drawings as God? Of course not. Just like the statues and paintings, they are beautiful art, and I appreciate that. But I won't bow down and worship them. I by it is fair to say you will not bow down to them as God either

I know its a long way to say no. But I wanted you to understand my thought process and how I arrived at my conclusion. See if doing this helps you understand the Bible a little better.
Keep walking my young friend.
Keep walking everybody.
May God bless,
Taz

Exodus 20:4-6 "You shall not make for yourself a carved image any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them."

The key is in the last part of the sentance;- " you shall not bow down to them" it is talking about worshipping, veneration, praying to etc etc etc.

We are to worship, pray to and venerate only God and Jesus.

First of all no one even has any idea what Jesus looked like, so its impossible to even make a image of him. Maybe God made it that way because Christ should never be made into a image or symbol.

And there is nothing at all in scripture than anyone could even try draw a image or picture of Christ as there is no discription so any image or picture is not worthy and should not be made to be worshipped or admired to represent Christ.

The only one single verse in scripture that gives any type of image to do with Christ is that was that he was not attractive in whatever context that means. So i have no idea, the only possible physical description of Jesus in the bible was that he was unattractive, and whatever context that is in.

There is nothing to go on to even try make a image of Christ in the flesh, its only whatever someone wants to believe in there own imagination what he looked like.

The Father is wise, he dont want Christ to made into a image of man and worshipped as a image of man,. God is Spirit, Christ leads to the Spirit of God. God is not a image or physical. God knows man will always tey turn him into a man made image or idol and worship him and he dont want that. He sends Christ and then people want to turn Chriet into a image while Christ is trying to point people to the Spirit.

Everyone is focused on Christ in the flesh yet Christ is focused on the Father above in Spirit and wants everyone to do the same as he was trying to set the example.

okay I understand thank you

I've been wanting to draw pictures of Jesus but I feel like if I do I'm doing something wrong...
You should look up Akiane's painting of the Lord titled: The Prince of Peace. She did that painting as a child after she met Jesus. A YouTuber said he saw the Lord in a near death event and that He looked like Akiane's painting. A few years before I'd ever heard of Akiane Kramerick, I had a dream that I saw the Lord and He looked very much like her depiction of Him. Her painting has served as a blessing and confirmation to many.

okay I understand thank you

I was just giving my opinion and as i see it as i believe knowone knows what Jesus looked like over 2000 years ago whenhe walking the earth as there is no historic or scriptual discription of him

You see all these different images of Christ the churches and people make up and they just delusions in the iimagination that is changing Jesus into the image of some man thats not Jesus.

Its like someone asking me to draw a picture of someone on a forum i have never acturally seen or met before, i cant do it, its impossible. Even i could have a friendship with them, an image of them would be just a delusion.

Um, do you know what he looked like when he walked the earth as the Incarnation of God? He wasn't the beautiful, milky-skinned, blue-eyed fellow of so many paintings. The prophet Isaiah said of Jesus that "he had no beauty or majesty that we should desire him" (Isaiah 53:2). Jesus was a plain guy (maybe even kind of ugly), of Middle Eastern complexion and features. Is this the Jesus you had in mind to draw?

Jesus now, in heaven, is very different than the dusty, sandaled, Jewish guy in a long robe, walking around Galilee. Check this out:

Revelation 1:12-18
12 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands,
13 and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest.
14 The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire,
15 his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters.
16 In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last,
18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.

Try drawing Jesus as he's described here! He's not the sunken-cheeked, weepy-faced guy who looks desperate for a sandwich that we so often see in paintings of him, eh? If you take a crack at drawing this description of Jesus, I'd love to see it when you're finished! (I'm an artist myself, you see: https://www.deviantart.com/nwaikikai )
