Is prayer just a placebo ? Faith crisis, please help !

Deb, Co? definitely a great blessing. I've often had that dream, there or Montana.

Thanks for your comment, Jo and yes, I agree, "both", among other things.

I was just added to Reba's Foyer Conversation so I guess that means I should stop posting on this unless, as I mentioned earlier, someone starts another thread on it, elsewhere.

Another one of those posts that I feel led in my heart to agree with. :biggrin2

My faith is very important to me and it has always been. Now I'm experiencing very serious doubts and I need you to help me.

When I started to study psychology I noticed that several things in Christianity can be explained in the way other than christian. For example prayer... if you really want something very much, focus completely on it and believe that God will help you with that, it does get better. It always did in my life.
I have experienced a strong social phobia and thanks to my faith I recovered from it.
However... that's the same with the Law of Attraction. If you believe that something good will happen to you, it really will. Same with faith - if you believe that God will help you with something, it will get better.
A really strong faith can be also a cause to miracles and sudden recoveries.
More and more often I think that maybe it's not God, who helps us... Maybe we help ourselves on our own ? Isn't it just the matter of positive attitude and just.. faith itself, without any higher power helping?
All of my prayers have helped, but I usually pray for things related to me, like school, my psychological problems, or my relationships. Have you ever experienced a prayer's impact on things not related to you ?
I need some strong testimonies, so please, tell me about your experiences.
My wife and I were driving down the highway in my truck and we saw a van pulled over to the side of the road. And there were people standing in a circle on the other side of the van. As we passed by I said to my wife, "I wonder what is happening over there". Immediately a voice spoke within me and said, "These people have a flat tire. They have a spare tire, but need somebody to bring them a jack". I then turned to my wife and said, "I just heard a voice saying these people have a flat tire. They have a spare, but they need someone to bring them a jack". My wife said, "I heard the exact same thing!"... Well I carry just such a jack in my truck. So I got off at the next exit.... got back on going the other way... got back off and back on again, so I could come up behind them. I pulled up behind them and got out of the truck. They were all watching me and as I approached I said, "God told me you all were praying for someone to bring you a jack". They instantly began jumping and leaping up in the air with their hands raised high over their heads, hooping and hollering praises unto God. True story.

That made my day.

As our soul prospers . . . can mean as God prepares us spiritually so we can see and benefit from all He does with us. We need the right character to seek the right things, and the right character to see things the right way, and the right character to do what is right with what we have. And God is so good; He will do better than all we now can handle well; so as we pray, we need to trust Him to correct us so we become able to handle well all that He will share with us :)

Satan was in Heaven itself. That was prosperity; but Satan was not satisfied, even in the perfect circumstances of Heaven and all the loving there. So, Satan did not benefit from having such prosperity.

So, I would say prayer includes seeking our Father for His correction (Hebrews 12:6-11), so we have His love's perfection with ability to appreciate and do good with all He shares with us.

And it needs to be about "us" . . . not only me, myself, and I; because we are one body, all together. We need to be praying "for all the saints" (Ephesians 6:18). Or else, we could be praying selfishly and be in character not making us able to receive and benefit from the good God desires to do with us.

So, in prayer I see it is good to trust God that He will do more and better than we can hope and pray >

Ephesians 3:20-21 > He is able to do more and better than we can think;

Psalm 40:5 > His thoughts "toward us" cannot be numbered; I note how David says God's thoughts of prosperity are "toward us", not only toward "me" ! ! !

Romans 8:26 says "we do not know what we should pray for as we ought" > I see this includes that we do not know the good that we ought to pray for > it is better, even in practical life, than we can now think to ask and expect and look for! So, we need to seek in prayer Him to prepare us so we become able to perceive and enjoy and benefit from all He does. And this is in sharing with our Jesus family brothers and sisters.

Because God is so good, He will answer our prayer the best possible way; so we should be ready to appreciate whatever He does, pray that He has us ready, thank Him for how He will do good. And right now He is already doing all that is good; so right now prayer can have us benefitting > "praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God" (Jude 20-21). In this love, we relate with Him tenderly and intimately and sweetly, while also sharing warmly in this love's affection with others who are praying and obeying in God's love.

Prosperity includes success . . . success at sharing with God and submitting to how God rules us in His own peace > Colossians 3:15; and success in loving warmly and kindly with our Jesus family people; and success in forgiving however we need to, so that we are not under the power of evil that people have done and still do > Romans 12:21; and success at having His sense in His love > "And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment." > Philippians 1:9 > with Hebrews 5:14 > "But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil."

You are our Best of Everything,
supply of all our need;
to You may we all praises sing,
You heed our every need.
We could not first trust You,
but first You brought us through >
You are our sure excuse
to trust in none but You.
Oh, though we may stray in expectations,
You do not forsake Your sheep,
but keep us in Your chastening
'til we obey Your rest and peace - - -
share Your true things with You,
with whom we have to do . . .
turn vain things to Your use,
depend on none but You
to draw us to that adoration
intimate with joy so sweet,
that we might join in intercession's
love and groanings at Christ's feet . . .
in perfect love with You,
with one another, too - - -
forgetting all behind Jesus
to stay our mind on You;
and forgiving all less than Jesus,
to depend on none but You;
and forsaking all below Jesus,
to stake all our claim in You
who are our Best of Everything :)

Hi this is my first post.

Praying is controversial sometimes. Some people think it is like a wishing well. They ask for stuff like a kid would do in a letter to Santa. Some people light Candles and do it like meditation which is like casting spells. Some do it like meditation which is like yoga. Some do it like positive affirmations and mental focus like psychology.

I guess it is like a plecebo sometimes. If you pray for a new job and then go apply you likely got the job because you applied for it. Cause God isn't applying for it for you.

And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
(1Jn 5:14-15)

You see any Controversy in that scripture there? Things done not found in scripture is controversial, and don't work.

Welcome to the Forums though.

Welcome to our Christian fellowship Sister Olivia. Concerning prayer, if God had not answered, and kept me through all the things I've done wrong in my life I would no longer be here.
As to concerning us in all our need, Proverbs 21:1 The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will. There is an old hymn, His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me. The scripture in
Heb 13:5 . . . He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee, and this in all manner of reason wondering if God would still hold me up, He raised me up when there was seemingly no hope.

Did I have great faith? Oh no, but it grew not only though the word, but in experience.
Heb 11:1 tells us that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen, and God is faithful to have been there when I didn't have faith to walk up a mountain, let along move it.

Yes, I applied for work, prayed, and was always surprised when I received jobs I thought were way over my head. God makes ways out of no way as the old adage, but we are told as believers in Heb 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
God bless you in Jesus' name. :wave2

I don't mean controversial in the way I think your are describing. I mean people have different beliefs of what is or is not appropriate to pray for, and what God will or will not answer. Also, the manner of prayer. I find the idea that God is a wish giver to be flawed. I find openly public prayer for celebrity purpose to be not useful. Praying for things like winning football games I find silly.

OK, Well, if your a Christian, then your belief in God answering prayer ought to be in line with the scriptures on praying. For example, God answers prayer, yes, no, Maybe, I have no clue. Is not a scripture, and no place to be found in scripture.

So, despite what others believe, as a Christian, we are suppose to believe what is written in the word.

You could introduce yourself and tell us what you believe, and a bit about yourself.

I was going to introduce myself in the into section, but I can't do that yet.
I don't understand what you mean, by "as a Christian" Christian means believing in the teachings of Jesus. There are many types, and not all believe exactly the same. If everyone agreed and had revelation then there wouldn't be so many different kinds.

So is prayer fake? No.

Is it a wishing well? I don't think so either. I just don't see that in reality.

What is the purpose of prayer? I think it has multiple.

Will God answer all prayer? I want to believe that is true, but honestly it doesn't seem so as some types of prayers never get answered.

I just don't think the topic is so black and white.

It's pretty black and white. What type of prayer does not get answered?

And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
(1Jn 5:14-15)

If we ask anything according to God's will, we have confidence He has heard us. If God hears us, then whatsoever we ask is given to us.

That does not seem to complicated.

Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
(Mar 11:24)

Jesus said believe you have what you asked, then it shall come.

That does not seem to complicated.

The hang up is, Not knowing God or his will on things, and because there is no confidence when people pray to God, not knowing Him or His will, they keep asking over and over for the same thing because they don't believe they have received it, as they are not sure God heard, or it's God's will to give them what they ask.

So in Just 3 scriptures, we find out how to pray, what conditions must be met, and why people don't get what they ask for. All in 3 scriptures.

Seems pretty black and white, don't you think?

I honestly don't understand your point. I think that some things God doesn't get involved in like sports. God doesn't rig baseball games for instance.

Praying for pride or show. Matthew 6:5
"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

Certain healing simply never occur. I have never seen a child with downs ever healed. Not saying it is impossible, but I don't believe families have not sincerely asked for their loved one to be healed, and all have just lacked faith. There must be some reason certain things don't get healed.

It isn't so black and white. Life is complicated, and so is faith, and prayer.

The problem is not God answering prayer, You just said you never seen down syndrome Healed, and certain things don't get healed.

The scripture said, Ask anything according to his Will. That means before you ask, you have to know what that is. If you don't think some things don't get healed, Like Down syndrome then it's pretty clear you don't know how God feels about it.

The scripture can't be wrong, so the problem is not God answering the prayer, the problem is not knowing his will to have the confidence that what you asked is done.

You listed some things Not God's will, like praying as a hypocrite. You know his will on that. So it's possible to know more things that are God's will.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
(Jas 1:5)

Eph_5:17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

Knowing God's will on something is not even the issue though.

Now if you want to talk about prayer, and how it don't work sometimes, and God is mysterious in all his ways, there are lots of folks around here to talk to you. I take the Word very serious, and talk with just those also serious about the Word of the living God.

Know God's will on what you want to ask. Very easy, first step.

Be blessed.

When I pray, I am in conversation with the Father, God Almighty, the Creator. As with my own parents, if I asked for something the answer I got was not always yes. Their answer was dependent on what was best for me and sometimes I didn't see it that way in my limited understanding at the time. The same is true with God. My understanding is limited and so the answers I get from God are not always what I would like to hear but I trust that whatever the answer is from Him, it is always what is best for me.

Sometimes I pray to put my petitions before Him. Sometimes I pray with praise and worship. Sometimes I pray with no purpose in mind other than to engage with Him on a personal level as I do with a friend like, "Gee Lord, this sure is a beautiful day, isn't it?"

Makes me wonder especially after reading just enough about the multi universe theory to get me in trouble. What is reality but what we perceive? And what is our perception, if not our creation? That's deep.

Should add that in my opinion nobody should be afraid to look at and attempt to understand how the universe/creation works. I see no reason why that would shake anyone's faith in God. I believe God called all of what he created 'good' this includes your brain, curiosity, ability to think and reason. So use it and explore what our Creator has made which includes prayer.

It is like having a conversation with God. It is like God is hearing us. And speaking to our hearts. As it is just you and God. Faith in God through Jesus is first and foremost!

This is from my facebook page I hope it helps answers one of your questions.

The desire transmitter and bio electrical data transfer.

Desire is the normal transmitter for sending and receiving bio electrical data, no positive or negative (Want) data is exchanged when users are connected by desire. So far I have discovered 4 types of data transfer.

Type 1. Users pain (Immediate threat)
Type 2. Users pleasure (Immediate response)
Type 3. Users standard emotional faculty (Emotional data exchange)
Type 4. Users needs and requests (Prayer)

Type1 & Type2.

When a user is in pain and their system is in immediate threat the desire transmitter is activated and looks for a user that can connect and send an immediate pleasure response. Users who have a fake want connection can not do this, first due to limited range and second due to users self want interests.

Type 3. (Research required)

I've so far discovered current bio electrical emotional stimulus that the user experiences from their environment can be transmitted through the desire signal to another person who's also connected in return.

Type 4. (Research required)

It seems that while bio electrical data is passed from one person to another, each user can detect the needs of the other user and could fulfill some kind of physical request later. (This is the only legitimate way I can see prayer actually works.)
