Many Christians will be quite surprised to discover the answer to the header question is no!
I used to believe that the antichrist of revelation is satan. However when I studies the scriptures more in depth I discovered the real demon spirit behind the antichrist.
It's Apolyon.
OK, I'm going to go to the scriptures and answer some questions about the bottomless pit first.
What is the bottomless pit?
Is it a real physical place?
What is in this bottomless pit?
Did Jesus ever speak about the bottomless pit?
OK, let's look at some scriptures where Jesus confronts a demon possessed man, and see exactly what is going on.
Luk 8:22 Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth.
Luk 8:26 And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.
Luk 8:27 And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in [any] house, but in the tombs.
Luk 8:28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, [thou] Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.
Luk 8:29 (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For often times it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)
Luk 8:30And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.
OK this next verse is very important because the demons are terrified that Jesus will send them to "the deep"
Luk 8:31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep.
Now when we read on we discover that the demons pleaded with Jesus to send them into a nearby heard of swine.
Jesus did however as soon as the demon spirits entered into the pigs, they went berserk and threw themselves over a cliff to their deaths!
Luk 8:32 And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them.
Luk 8:33 Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked.
OK so we learn from these scriptures is that Jesus knew of the abyss and so did the demons.
However, was this place a physical dwelling?
Let's go to the scriptures and find out.
Jud 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
This verse tells us that those angles, which we read about in have been kept in this place of "darkness" until the judgement day.

In the New Testament, the original Greek word of the Scriptures, pronounced ab-us-sos, describes a deep pit - so deep that it is, in effect, bottomless. I say in effect bottomless because the Scriptures describe the abyss as being on earth, or rather in the earth, and therefore it cannot be deeper from the surface than the earth's radius (surface to center) i.e. about 4,000 miles. Since the Bible refers to the abyss as a place where demons are imprisoned, it would not then be entirely a physical place within the earth anyway, since demons are spirits who can pass through physical barriers. The abyss is logically a spiritual and physical place within the earth. Depending on the version of the Bible, the original Greek word is variously translated as "abyss," "the deep," or "the bottomless pit."
And so, the Abyss is a real place, where demonic spirits are chained by God in this place of "darkness" which the demons are trapped in until the judgement day.
There it is; a real physical place where demonic spirits cannot escape being bound in chains made by God. These "chains" obviously hold spiritual beings, which I assert, only God could manufacture.
It brings to mind the angelic guards with flaming swords who God has placed to guard the entrance of the Garden of Eden where the tree of life is.
Gen 3:23Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
Gen 3:24So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
Alright, when we read revelation, we see scriptures which have the lock of the Abyss opened.
Rev 9:1 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
Rev 9:2And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
Demons coming out of their prison are described as locusts and are commanded by God to not harm grass, or any green thing, or any tree. Locusts are ravenous creatures that consume entire crop fields in huge hoards, and God commanded these demonic creatures not to harm anything except humans who were not protected by God's seal on their foreheads....
Rev 9:3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
Rev 9:4And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
These locusts, are also commanded not to actually kill people, only to torment them by stinging with the sting of a scorpion.
What a terrible fate. My father was stung by a scorpion in Africa when he was a soldier just after WWII.
He had served aboard the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Illustrious during WWII, and after the war he transferred over to the army. He didn't speak about the war very much, and only when a little menace son of his pressed him to (ya, that would have been me) but he told me the scorpion sting was very painful.
He also contracted malaria when he was there...what fun being a soldier is!
So just to give a little back story, let’s look at who these first angles were who eventually were chained up and sent to the Abyss.
Gen 6:1 ¶ And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
Gen 6:2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they [were] fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
Gen 6:4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare [children] to them, the same [became] mighty men which [were] of old, men of renown.
Gen 6:5 ¶ And GOD saw that the wickedness of man [was] great in the earth, and [that] every imagination of the thoughts of his heart [was] only evil continually.
Gen 6:6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.
Gen 6:7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.
God saw that men were becoming more and more despicable, and this mixing of sinful angelic beings and humans only made the situation worse, and so God formulated his plan to destroy this evil seed by flooding the entire earth up to over twenty feet above the highest mountains.
Now this is not an apologetic study of Noah’s flood, so I won’t go into that.
My purpose here is to show who the first inhabitants were of the Abyss.
It was these half breed angle/man that went there, as well as the angels who were the fathers of them.
