  • Focus on the Family

    Strengthening families through biblical principles.

Focus on the Family addresses the use of biblical principles in parenting and marriage to strengthen the family.

Is the Bible always our basis?

No. We have to "Rightly divide" what we are looking at.
Case in point: How many of us have dragged our disobedient sons to the edge of town to be stoned to death by the members of the church?
Deuteronomy 21:18 -21

Or... How many of us hate our entire families now that we are disciples? Luke 14:26 says to.
In the text the word "hate" means to love Me more.

25 Many people were traveling with Jesus. He said to them, 26 “If you come to me but will not leave your family, you cannot be my follower. You must love me more than your father, mother, wife, children, brothers, and sisters—even more than your own life! 27 Whoever will not carry the cross that is given to them when they follow me cannot be my follower. Luke 14:25-27 ERV

6 “Joshua, you must be strong and brave! You must lead these people so that they can take their land. I promised their fathers that I would give them this land. 7 But you must be strong and brave about obeying the commands my servant Moses gave you. If you follow his teachings exactly, you will be successful in everything you do. 8 Always remember what is written in that book of law. Speak about that book and study it day and night. Then you can be sure to obey what is written there. If you do this, you will be wise and successful in everything you do. 9 Remember, I commanded you to be strong and brave. Don’t be afraid, because the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:6-9 ERV

20 My son, pay attention to what I say. Listen closely to my words. 21 Don’t let them out of your sight. Never stop thinking about them. 22 These words are the secret of life and health to all who discover them. 23 Above all, be careful what you think because your thoughts control your life.

24 Don’t bend the truth or say things that you know are not right. 25 Keep your eyes on the path, and look straight ahead. 26 Make sure you are going the right way, and nothing will make you fall. 27 Don’t go to the right or to the left, and you will stay away from evil. Proverbs 4:20-27 ERV

There's more to it than simple "love Me more" because here comes another thought. It's a sparrow thought, so be warned.

Idols.

That's the thought: I D O L S

Yes, iLOVE what you say is true enough, but there is moar!

Sometimes we put things in front of God. Even good things. Even the love of our families can become an idol if we value that (and their opinions) more than how we value Him and His Love for us.

It's a COMMAND ONE (1) thing. We are to do command TWO (2) too (also), but not moar than our "Love God, FIRST," command one (1).

So then? How does God deal with idolaters? He deals with us in a very specific manner. We get His unmerited favor. We get His grace. We are treated as if we are members of HIS family (because we are). We are not thrown out. But we are counseled and as we continue to cooperate with his Guiding Light? Then, and eventually, we learn to throw all idols out of our house! Our "his and mine" house! His house. Us.

in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. ....These are grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires; they are ...

No, we don't learn to kick our parents out so they have to fend for themselves during their old age, we learn to kick out the false idol of worship that we made in our hidden place that was dedicated to our self love and family love too. We put that before HIM. We had made an idol of ourselves and our relatives, as an extension of ourselves, and we refused to
Hear His Plain Truth(!) and worshiped it in front of Him! So then, ultimately we learn not only to toss idols out our front door, we also learn to spit at them after they are tossed.

Patooie! I SPIT AT YOU, FALSE IDOL! I will forever love my God for I am His people and He is Mine and I no longer give preference to what man says and it doesn't even matter if that 'man' who is talking is my family. I spit on you! YECH!

No, see, you can't do that. Yes, we all know what THAT particular verse means, but there are literally hundreds of other verses throughout the Bible that any number of scholars have already found themselves divided on the actual meaning.

As I did with Luke 14:26, I am trying to stick with very well known verses when I now select another.... the snake handling verse. We "educated" and "rational" people "know" the true meaning (even though we all can't agree among ourselves) yet the people handling these reptiles are not idiots, devoid of the ability to read and think. And they just look at the words written in the Bible, and they BELIEVE them to be the truth. Demonstrating that we cannot just read, and do..... without applying the brains God gave us.

No, see, you can't do that.

Not only can iLOVE do that, that is what iLOVE has done.
Frankly, you can't say that iLOVE can't do that without presumption. It's done been done, now hasn't it?

And don't let me hear you imply that you're the only "well edumacated" person able to rationalize stuff that is misquited either. Because I knows me ya didn't say that, but just don't let me hear ya try. Okay? IN other words, "Who's that 'we' you talkn' 'bout Willis? You gots ya a lil' mousy in yer pocket?

English is marvelously constructed. But it ain't Greek (which is all Greek to me). But English? It carries multiple meanings and flavors of meanings so much that if you only read it, and don't hear it spoken, you may be left pondering and wandering while you scratch your (I hope not swollen) head in bemused befuddlement especially after listening to me for a bit too long, right? So strop scratching, will ya? It's okay. No harm meant. You know how to take a jesting, me knows ya do. It's not a chide.

PS - I love your siggy :salute Give me another second, I want to go back and keep unpacking what you said above. Good statement, by the way, said that guy who rambles and takes pride in it as if he thinks he's Ol' Man River Himself who is merely meandering on his way to the shore...

At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Matthew 11:25 NIV

Putting God FIRST is going to His Word FIRST. God wants to use His Word to give you a personal experience with Him. When you use the Written Word to connect to the Living Word, you will get a Personal Word from Him.

Sorry, still chewing on the bit O' wisdom that came through our brother, Willie T

It's okay. I'm clean meats. I chew cud and I have split hoof so I too may fly (climb?) to the mountain top like an eagle (goat? kid?), mixing metaphors like a master chef and ya can't break an omelette... without the who came first, the chickun or the egg?!? Right? Don't get me started. Just shoo me away and flick your hand at me. I get that. It's all good.

Love you guys! :idea Even our in-the-heart fleshy tablets are funny. :confused

Willie T "No, you can't do that..."

Means something moar like: Hey Guys! I heard something that I believe was from God the other day and I'm very excited to tell you about it. You see, I had been in the habit of just picking Scriptures off the top of my head (without sufficient forethought) and the LORD showed me that with just a little more care, like, for instance, if I went to HIM in prayer first? Or even if I just used my God Given brain and thought about it for a bit before I talked? Then my voice would be heard with much more clarity... Let me try to illustrate with a couple Scripture Choices of my own, which are also freshly used right here, as example...

No, see, you can't do that. Yes, we all know what THAT particular verse means, but there are literally hundreds of other verses throughout the Bible that any number of scholars have already found themselves divided on the actual meaning.

Or something like that, yes? It takes me a long time, Joe, to hear what is bean said -- and it's because you gots-ta speak up, I gots beans in my ears... ♪ beans in my ears... ♫beans in my ears.

But where was that train of thought going, I ask myself? Oh, yeah. Watch out... chug-ah-chag-ah-cha-cha-Charleston!

And we know that if we stick our hands into a wall, so as to break it down? There is a risk that we might get snake-bit... Because as we argue amongst each others, we will encounter walls. Look at Ecclesiastes 10:7 and Ecc 10:8 and Ecc 10:9 then... And if we try to knock down walls that our brothers built? Who knows? Maybe they were walls of protection and were built for a reason. So as we stick our hands in? Out might spring an adder, or an asp... and we may get Brazilian Pit Viper Venom coursing through our veins but even if that happens? Shake it off, because we can handle such things readily and there is no fear of poisoning doctrines of devils.

:thinkingBut that's not the only way to thimk on these thingamajigas.

Chicken has to come first. It takes longer to cook. If you cook the eggs first they'll be way over done.

:agreed I agree.

Chikun first. Because God created Bird, not egg. Then he said (after birdie was made) only then He told how it would reproduce and said, "after own kind..."
Well, that's what I think for what that's worth, that is.

Welcome Not_Now.Soon Nice to meet you. I'm Sparrowhawke, but my friends get to call me bird-brained.
