Jesus said seven statements on the cross...
It is called The Seven Words of Jesus and they are obtained from the four gospels.

  1. Luke 23:34: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.
  2. Luke 23:43: Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.
  3. John 19:26–27: Woman, behold your son. Son, behold your mother
  4. Matthew 27:46 & Mark 15:34 My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?
  5. John 19:28: I thirst.
  6. John 19:30: It is finished.
  7. Luke 23:46: Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit.

What did Jesus mean when He said "It is finished" ?

His sacrificial work for the redemption of mankind, is finished.

He is still working today, interceding for the saints.

He is still teaching us today, as well, by His Spirit.

I find some use the unbiblical phrase “finished work of Christ”, in order to promote the idea of believing in the finished work of Christ.

Now this can be a good concept if taught in the harmony and balance of truth.

However, the phrase “finished work of Christ” is not found in the Bible.

I agree.
Some use the phrase the finished work of Christ to say that Jesus has done everything for us and we are not required to do anything because "it is finished" meaning the work.

Jesus' work is finished.
What HE came to do is finished.

But it's our turn now to accept that sacrifice and apply it to our lives and follow Him as disciples, which is our reasonable service.

Titus 3:14
And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful.

Psalm 31 possibly... maybe
I don't see it.
However, verse 23 is interesting.
O love the LORD, all you His godly ones! The LORD preserves the faithful And fully recompenses the proud doer.

It's interesting because I keep hearing some say that we're not supposed to be proud or get any glory and it all goes to God...as if God is afraid of being robbed of some glory by us.

Jesus does, however, say in Mathew 6:1, not to practice our righteousness before men. Mathew 6:2, when giving alms do not sound a trumpet, Mathew 6:5, do not pray in the streets.....

What do you think?

When Jesus used the term "It is Finished" 3 words in English it is one word in Greek a form of τέλειοι teleos.
The same word used of “It is Finished” is the word we are told to “Endure to the end” yes, the same as Jesus did. It is the same word that is translated perfect, mature, complete, it simply means
What am I doing for Jesus, All the way to the END?

Holy, Clean, Set Aside, Complete, entire, truth, Perfect, Pious; There are many words in this line of thought that say about the same thing. All of these words point to 1. The person, 2.”Now, but not yet”, and 3. Our relation to God.

We also have the same word in English representing several Greek/Hebrew words, and several English words used to translate one Greek/Hebrew word. All this makes it a little time consuming to trace all the meanings to see just what is being said.

Here it is in a simple line.

All Holiness, Maturity, Perfection, Christian life, all THEOLOGY in one line.

What am I doing for Jesus?
What am I doing for Jesus that I keep doing (Endure) to the END?
What am I doing for Jesus that that allow others to see JESUS IN ME?
What am I doing for Jesus that makes me set apart, Clean, Holy, Complete in the work of the Cross, SO OTHERS SEE JESUS IN ME?

The words simply do not say “without error-failing-mistake-short coming” it says IN JESUS and the HOLY SPIRIT, COMPLETE as I endure to love and serve Jesus to the end.

Christian Holiness is to do what Jesus told us to do,
Love Him
Obey Him
Keep His Commandments
As best any human in the power of the Holy Spirit may.

Hi Rev,

I gave you a like because you put a lot of work into your post and it has a lot of information and I really like learning new things.

I've never heard all of the above before and tomorrow morning I'll be doing a little study on it.

I particularly liked this part of the post (which I highlighted)..

- Original: τέλειος - Transliteration: Teleios - Phonetic: tel'-i-os

Great topic, thank you for starting it.

Was it the work of redemption that was finished / completed at 3pm on Good Friday? Is the resurrection not part of man's redemption?

---> "Who was delivered for our offenses, and was raised again for our justification."(Romans 4:25)

---> "And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins." (1 Cor 15:17)

I would like to suggest that what happened and was finished on Good Friday actually began the night before in the Upper Room on Holy Thursday. More later...

13.] The primary meaning of this seems to be, that whosoever remained faithful till the destruction of Jerusalem, should be preserved from it. No Christian, that we know of, perished in the siege.. But it has a second meaning, according to which τέλος will signify, to an individual, the day of his death (see Rev_2:10),—his martyrdom, as in the case of some of those here addressed,—
to the Church, endurance in the faith to the end of all things.

τέλη the word can be used as the “Payment of a debt” The complete payment of taxes or Custom. Τέλη was used as an IDIOM meaning the Last payment on a Note.

τετέλεσται expresses the fulfilling of that appointed course of obedience, and suffering, the payment which the Lord Jesus had undertaken That was now over,—the redemption of man accomplished, the debt required by God was paid in full—and from this time “the joy that was set before Him” begins.

The same word used of It is Finished” is the word we are told to “Endure to the end” yes, the same as Jesus did. It is the same word that is translated perfect, mature, complete, it simply means
What am I doing for Jesus, All the way to the END?

Christ did what we were incapable of doing, which is pay the price for our sins with His own blood.

A pure and sinless life freely offered up to God on our behalf.

Thank you Jesus!

Or before the foundation of the world.

OK

The third cup?

Edit to add to my post:

This does a great job juxtaposing that which began in the Upper Room on Holy Thursday with its completion on Good Friday...

I believe He also was quoting Psa.22:1-31
Teaching us...showing us..

Verse 1
My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken Me? Why art thou so far from helping Me, and from the words of My roaring?
....
All they that see Me laugh Me to scorn, they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,

He trusted on the Lord that He would deliver Him, let Him deliver Him, seeing He delighted in Him.
....
I am poured out like water, and all My bones are out of joint, My heart is like wax, it is melted in the midst of My bowels.
My strength is dried up like a potshred, and My tongue cleaveth to My jaws, and thou hast brought Me into the dust of death.
For dogs have encompassed Me, the assembly of the wicked have in closed Me, they pierced My hands and My feet.

I may tell all My bones, they look and stare upon Me.
They part My garments among them, and cast lots upon My vesture.
.....
For He hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted,
Neither hath He HID His face from Him,
But, when He cried unto Him, He heard.
.....
A seed shall serve Him, it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation.
They shall come, and shall declare His righteousness unto a people that shall be born,
That He hath done this...it is finished..

That he had done everything that needed to be done.
He had finished.

Had he done everything that needed to be done at that point?

"The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again." (Luke 24:7)

In all simplicity "it is finished" means the debt is paid in full. Not any debt Jesus had, but our debt He paid in full.

But when He spoke those words, He had not yet died, nor rose from the dead.

Does what occurred the night before in the Upper Room provide the complete narrative?
