It's Starting (Windows 8 phone)

In all fairness, I won't harp on the virus issue. It's too early to say what will happen, but the new windows phone users are being plagued with random reboots and lock-ups which for all practical purposes are the same thing viruses do anyway. As for the battery life, no doubt from the resource gluttony Microsoft is famous with. Everyone knows to kill apps to save battery life (it happens on all phones). But does this one allow that, or will it still run stuff in the background typical of Microsoft??

I stated (ad nauseum) about people not putting up with this kind of stuff. We've been spoiled for decades now with cell phones, etc that are reliable. But it would be frustrating to have your daughter stuck on a deserted back road with such a phone and..... "yeah yeah Tim, we heard you many times before. Calls home and a virus allows her to get a Chinese porn site instead." :lol

I learned something else about the Microsoft phone, today. On a forum someone had a problem where their email could only be sent "reply to all", i.e. if a message from an individual to a group was received from another individual, that other individual had trouble replying to just the sender and not the whole group.

Yeah, I know this can happen. Umm Hmm. Yes, indeed. I know because our CEO sent to all of us holiday greetings. Someone else did a "reply to all" thanking the CEO for the gift of booze. :toofunny A recall notice was sent to all of us, but oops! too late. The original message said, "Sent from my Windows phone."

Win-doze...... does it ever end?? :lol

Could this be another case of launching an OS without it being properly stress tested yet? Win98 part 2?

I think the future of "computers" are laptops, and small personal devices, e.g. ipads, iphones, etc. We don't need towers any longer except maybe a business setting. However, that is the area Microsoft traditionally mastered in, not the more recent device market. Since that really took off the last several years, I think they are getting desperate and trying to join the crowd and rush things.

Since I'm a Linux fan, It will be interesting to see where that's going as well. It works on towers and laptops, I'm aware it can be loaded in some devices (like Android gets loaded on some things) but these newer devices do not have the OS loaded by the owner the way a tower or laptop may (e.g. if a person builds a computer).

Right now, I'm not concerned because laptops are very much in use yet and are just sleek versions of a tower computer, and have been around about as long, too. But the day may come that the dividing line may not be so great between hardware and software --- they'll be made together and that may limit software choices. However, I have confidence Linux will prevail over these obstacles. Perhaps even Microsoft will, too, but I'm not sure it will be a key player any longer.

You hit it right on the head. Windows 8 is designed for the cloud, that's why if you don't have a touch screen, you find yourself wanting to swipe the screen lol.

Microsoft is loosing market share and PC sales are way, way down as Tablets replace laptops. Thing is, for Microsoft to truly compete, they are going to have to find a better Virtual solution to run their desktop OS. VMWare and Citrix do this very well and Microsoft can't even handle an Enterprise on a virtual platform. Their Server OS just isn't up to the task. What they do have is glitchy and not scalebale while Linux based systems are becomming cutting edge... did you ever think the day would come? Well, it's fast approaching.

Right on, Stovebolts! In the meantime, an ol' fogey like me soon approaching 54 years old does not mind buying the towers and laptops for low cost since nobody younger wants them. Now's the opportunity to get them cheap! But then the thing the younger crowd don't understand is that us old-timers can't see the small devices up close any longer, even with bifocals. :lol :yes And even if we could, we tend to fat-finger them anyways, so these big clunky things are more our style. :D

Ha! You are so right! I need my tri-focals or I'm just miserable lol! And yes, I fat finger a lot. Meanwhile my kid is zipping along on his dinky I-Pod and yes, he does tease me how slow I am on an electronic keyboard, and the mistakes I make on them lol. But he has nothing on me with a standard keyboard! I can run circles around him.

Have you played with the Chrome Book? I would never buy it for Windows because it uses a slower processor etc, but man, does it zip with their version of Android! Scary fast!
