Bible Study James 2:10-11; The Truth Behind Breaking the Ten Commandments

James 2:10-11 GNBUK. Whoever breaks one commandment is guilty of breaking them all. For the same one who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not commit murder.” Even if you do not commit adultery, you have become a lawbreaker if you commit murder.

I have been pondering this verse as it effectively equates "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain" or "Honoring thy father and thy mother” with “Thou shalt not kill.”... From a human, and otherwise fleshly perspective, the act of murder seems to be of vastly greater consequence.

But in the eyes of God, all of these transgressions are equivalent. In a way, this does seem like a good way to help us focus on each of the 10 commandments and try to pursue them whole heartedly.
This below clip from Billy Graham made me think more about this scripture portion. Support the channel if you enjoy the video! :cross

Whoever breaks one commandment is guilty of breaking them all.
Rather purs those who believe they live sinless lives in a spot!

Being angry because one doesn't get one's way is equal to murder!
How often we are angry at petty issues, jealous when we have no reason for jealousy, how often does our conversation fall below, the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth!

We forget that while we are not judged by the ten commandments, they are still God's yardstick for what is or is not sin.

Sin is sin as there is not greater one then another that can not be forgiven, except for blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which needs to be another topic.

We are all born with a nature to sin and not imputed with Adam's sin as scripture does not support this. All have sinned and fallen short of God's glory, that's a fact. But, to those who are of Christ need to get up every morning and crucify this flesh and walk in the Spirit so we do not fulfill the lust of the flesh. No one has to sin like it's some kind of command to do so as it's a freewill choice to fall to the temptation to sin.

Even a Spiritually born again child of God will mess up at times as we are still mortal living in this fleshly body where the nature to sin dwells. Grace does not give us a license to sin, but when we do we have an intercessor (Christ Jesus) before the Father who makes intercession for us and forgives our sin when we repent of them. There will always be a struggle between the flesh and the Spirit and sometimes the flesh will win a battle, but never the war as flesh and Spirit can not mix.

Galatians 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

But, if we willfully sin then there is no more sacrifice for sins we commit as it will bring with it consequences brought upon our self.

Heb 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
Heb 10:27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
Heb 10:28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses:
Heb 10:29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
Heb 10:30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.
Heb 10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

If anything is "put on the spot" it is God's promises to keep us sinless.
Like all these scriptures...
“Be ye therefore perfect, even as you Father which is in heaven is perfect.” (Matt 5:48)

“I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me." (John 17:22-23)

“Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
For he that is dead is freed from sin.” (Rom. 6:6-7)

"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." (Rom 8:1)

"Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame." (1 Cor 15:34)

"For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." (2 Cor 5:21)

"Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you." (2 Cor 13:11)

"And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others." (Eph 2:1-3)

"Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in anything ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you." (Phil 3:15)

"Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:" (Col 1:28)

"Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity." (2 Tim 2:19)

"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." (2 Tim 3:16-17)

"But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul." (Heb 10:39)

"Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.
They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate." (Titus 1:15-16)

"But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing." (James 1:4)

"If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body." (James 3:2)

"But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy." (1 Peter 1:15-16)

“For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps
Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:” (1 Peter 2:21-22)

"Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;" (1 Peter 4:1)

"According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust." (2 Peter 1:3-4)

“Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:" (2 Peter 1:10)

"Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless." (2 Peter 3:14)

“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7)

“Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.” (1 John 3:4-9)

“We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.” (1 John 5:18)

Sin is sin as there is not greater one then another that can not be forgiven, except for blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which needs to be another topic.

If one gets reborn from God's seed, they will not have to worry about their past's sinful nature.

Exactly as our past sins were forgiven and remembered no more, but yet the nature to sin is within the flesh that we struggle with daily for we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places, but there are times when we do not always put on the full armour of God and find ourself in the flesh and will mess up at times as there is no such thing as sinless perfection as we are yet mortal and incorruptible at times. There is a difference between willful and unwilful sin.

If sin us still in the flesh, then that person was not reborn of God's seed.
That which is born of God has no sin in it.

John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

1Co 15:50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
1Co 15:51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
1Co 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
1Co 15:53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
1Co 15:54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

Sinless perfection came from the teachings of John Wesley, Charles Wesley, John Fletcher of the 18th century in whom founded the "Holiness movement". What they teach about sinless perfection are only taught in their own theology as they take scripture out of context to support their theories and man made doctrines.

This website above explains this massive stumbling block that is placed before others that yet have little knowledge and are easily deceived into believing a lie.

Thank God the skin and bones have no power over the mind of the newly made righteous.

It is a pity that Wesley didn't maintain his righteous belief until his death.
He back-tracked for some reason.

Are you calling Paul a liar ?
He wrote..."Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame." (1 Cor 15:34)
And..."Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity." (2 Tim 2:19)
Peter wrote..."Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;" (1 Peter 4:1)

I have more examples of the apostles exhortations to be perfectly sinless if you need them.

We have been through this many times and as long as we are here on this earth housed in a fleshly body we are going to unwillingly sin. It's not deliberate sin like we plan to do so, but many times we sin unaware that we do. But yet Jesus is always there to make intersession for us when we do mess up at times. There is no one on earth that is Spiritually born again and indwelled with the Holy Spirit that walks in the Holy Spirit 24/7. God's grace pardons us and His mercy loves us, but does not give us a license to sin.

You could heed the words of Jesus Christ to fix your self imposed problem.
He said..."Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.
9 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire." (Matt 18:8-9)

Or you could experience the circumcision done without hands from Col 2:11..."In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:"

The NT made it possible to cast away the old body and be reborn of God's seed.
Be the new creature !

No it is God's command that we business. God does not promise to keep us sinless, only that if we repent of them that he will forgive us.
He took away the flesh so we could walk in the Spirit. (Rom 6:6, Ga 5:24)
He allowed our rebirth from His seed. (1 John 3:9)
He granted us Gentiles the gift of repentance from sin. (Acts 11:18)
He gave us the gift of the Holy Ghost. (Acts 2:38)
He promised we will never be tempted above what we can handle. (1 Cor 10:13)
If that isn't enough to keep you on the straight path, it is only because you want to keep sinning.

He took away the flesh
I don't know about you, but I and every Christian I know has a physical, fleshy body.
Yes like Paul I struggle with the things I don't want to do but do, and reread what Paul wrote as he wrote using present tenses meaning it was a current problem.

Thankfully God knows our weaknesses and will forgive the repentant sinner.

What is sin?
Failing to love the Lord your God with All one's heart, mind and spirit and failing to Love others as one loves oneself.

We are All sinners.

I don't know about you, but I and every Christian I know has a physical, fleshy body.
Yo need to learn the difference between "flesh" and "skin and bones".
Most NT uses of the word "flesh" deal with the worldly oriented mind.
Yes like Paul I struggle with the things I don't want to do but do, and reread what Paul wrote as he wrote using present tenses meaning it was a current problem.
Those Tom 7 words were a narrative of Paul's pre-conversion life, while he still walked after the "worldly oriented mind" and trying unsuccessfully to fulfil the Law of Moses.
He had mentioned prior to the words you used that he no longer walked after the "worldly oriented mind" in verse 5..."For when we were in the flesh,..."
Thankfully God knows our weaknesses and will forgive the repentant sinner.
Thankfully, God allows us to cast off the "flesh" and walk in the Spirit after being reborn from HIS seed.
What is sin? Failing to love the Lord your God with All one's heart, mind and spirit and failing to Love others as one loves oneself.
John wrote that "all unrighteousness is sin". (1 John 5:17)
We are All sinners.
You are wrong.
Repentance from sin allows us to permanently turn from sin.
Some love God enough that they obey Him all the time.

You are wrong.
I am always aware that I could be wrong, are you?
Romans 7:
So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?
25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!

So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

Strange how Paul talks about this in the presence tense.

I am always aware that I could be wrong, are you?
I trust that God will not allow me to be turned out of the way with wrong understandings.

Verse 23 is answered in Rom 8:2..."For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death."
Rom 7 is the "before", and Rom 8 is the "after".
Part of Rom 7 is Paul's narrative of his past, in the flesh, and trying unsuccessfully to keep the Law of Moses.
24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?
That conundrum was already answered in Rom 6:6..."Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin."
25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord!
Delivered, not still held in bondage !
So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

Yep, and in the present tense he is free of the law of sin, and the body of death.
He now follows his God, and the flesh was destroyed.
The mind leads and the skin and bones follow.

Unfortunately this is twisting scripture to make it read what your preconceived ideas want it to read.
Romns, like all the epistles is a long letter addressing Christians, instructing and encouraging them.
Paul is illustrating from his own current experience that he still struggles with sin.
Bragging that he longer suffers from temptation would not help those he was writing to.

Is Romans 8:2 true ?
"For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death."
It is, so how can Rom 7:23 be in the present tense ?
"But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members."
Either both are in the present tense, or one is in the past and the other in the present.

BTW, temptations will not cease at a man's conversion.
Walking in darkness will, however, cease.

We are not judged by the 10 commandments, but they still exist and tell us what sin is.
