I take it to be referring to a day in court for instance where we're asked to swear an oath before testifying. Though most states now have the option to affirm, rather than swear, "so help me God". Which then would be in keeping with the passage's teaching I think.

I was called to give a deposition once and affirmed to tell the truth. The clerk first recited the , so help me God, oath. I requested affirmation and she complied.
Any time we're to swear in any circumstance I think that scripture applies.
Then the question becomes, is it the same as signing a contractual agreement? Isn't that swearing an oath? I ask because it seems it could be answered either yes or no.

It may have something to do with taking the name of the LORD in vain. Don't be using The Name glibly. ( like: "I swear to God I did not eat the last piece of pie.")
Just let your "Yes" or "No" be sufficient.

honestly i have googled it read commentaries read you all comments sent text to my bro his thoughts no oaths to any other religion or other gods i am still studying on it..personally i thing all remarks has merit.

I swore on oath to tell the truth as a witness to a crime in court once .. That scripture run across my mind and I hesitated for an instant . But I decided that I had no intention of telling anything but the truth in the first place oath or no oath .. Now if anyone had brought up that scripture before hand I would have argued .... I took the masonic oath before I was a Christian but I would not do it now .. Also I didn't join a church because taking an oath was part of the deal ..

There is another scripture which may apply here. One about, what we bind here on earth will be bound in Heaven and what we loose here on earth will be loosed in Heaven.

Let your words speak in all truth in the aspect of yes I know the truth or no I do not know what the truth is. Yes and no is clear enough as your words should not bring any condemnation against you. Never swear an oath to anything that can catch you in a snare and becomes a stumbling block to you.

I think part of it may be that it was a cultural thing to swear by this and that, and get eleborate about it. It seems like a form of self-aggrandizement; best to avoid that.
