Japanese Thread!

Oh wow!!! Interesting!!! Now I"m questioning my study material.

I remember you told me of a website that teaches the language, but it didn't work out for me. The website is not laid out in a way that I'm comfortable with.

So what do I study then? What do YOU study?

Im sleepy. Time for bed! Oyasuminasai! :D

I currently use the online Japanesepod101, but I wouldn't actually recommend it for beginners. It's better for intermediate and above, as its format is kind of random access. A more structured course or book is better for starting out. I started out with Learn Japanese: New College Text as the textbook for the introductory class I took in college. It's good, but more for use with a formal instructor as I did. I then went to self-study with a very old textbook of 30 basic lessons called Teach Yourself Japanese, but it's no longer in print.

I've not used but heard good things about Japanese From Zero, Japanese for Busy People, and the Genki series. The Minna No Nihongo Series is supposed to be the most popular in the world for begnners. I would recommend you go to a bookstore and actually leaf through these books, and choose one that feels right for you.

I did not like Pimsleur's CD course. Berlitz was just OK as an introduction. Heard good things about the Power Japanese computer course, but never had a chance to use it (gave to a friend).

I'm fine tonight. Arigatoo gozaimasu

Tonight Japanese is odd. I'm having to use my mouth and voice in a different way than any kind of English words. It feels weird, lol

I'm a bit strange (well you already knew that), but people said I could pronounce Japanese perfectly the first time I tried. Partly because I'm Asian, maybe. I think my diction has actually gone down, though, since learning more. Not sure why that would be.

The main thing is getting rid of stress accents. Some people never really drop them, and sound beginnerish no matter how long they've studied.

Im concentrating on pronunciation so hard I'm not really learning their meaning. Does this go away?

Well, that I'm not sure about. I actually never had a problem with pronuciation. You have to remember, I grew up watching Samurai movies with my Dad.

Yes, I am very greatful for those opportunities to travel to that wonderful land.
