John 17:11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
We know this was before his crucifixion, but is referenced as if it were after. You are correct! God is not limited to time and space as we are, but most don't seem to realize that.
Has nothing to do with time and space; it is the way the Greek reads. It is common to use the past tense for something that is so sure it is as though it already happened. You will see this all over Scripture.
One of the best and most delightful examples is Romans 8:29-30
29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; 30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.
All this is past tense because it is so sure for those that are the called or being called or have yet to be called; that it as though it already happened. God chose this Greek language for all of its nuances IMO; it is quite wonderful.
God bless!
