People were very poor at the time of St. Francis,
13th century.

He wanted to spread the word of God.

He thought God meant an old church that is still there, but God meant His Church, His Body.

To allow for people to understand the story of the first Christmas better, he decided to build a Nativity Scene, at the church if I remember.
