Just a friendly Warning about Watchmen.

The new superhero movie Watchmen hits theaters this week, as the resident geek here I thought I should warn all you especially those with kids, that this Movie is rated R for good reason. Anyone familiar with the work of Alan Moore and/or this comic book should already know why, but if not I'll tell you. The film is very graphically Violent with both male & female nudity as well as a sex and rape scene, so if your kids are into superheroes take them to see Wolverine instead it's only a PG-13 and not half as violent. Just thought I'd warn you.

Glad you warned about it.
I can't understand why they have a movie about supermen etc designed to attract young and teenagers and then have it as an R!? :verysad
I saw the previews so knew it would be a bit like that and read why it was an 'R'. I didn't know about the rape scene glad you told us, so wouldn't go and see it (I rarely see any "R"s any more)

A friend of a friend went to it last night and said it was terrible, now this guy's not a Christian but he says it's just a bad movie all the way around and even fans of the comic are saying it's lousy. So I'd say it's best just to see something else. The Wolverine movie will be out in may and it's getting a PG-13 for violence but nothing to strong so if you want to see a good Hero movie wait until then.

Thanks will do, that sounds good :thumb

Saw it last night... it was pretty epic at times, and somewhat thought-provoking, and Rorschach was awesome! But at times it was just okay. I'm not a movie critic, but I just thought some parts were so-so.

It had violence, gore, cursing, and sexual content (R rating is deserved), but it was still a pretty cool movie, and despite the so-so parts I still liked it a lot!

Totally looking forward to Wolverine!

Ginger, it's not really intended for younger viewers. Just like the graphic novel, it's intended for mature viewers only.

And "supermen" is a bit of a misnomer. Only one of these characters has any actual powers...the whole driving point of the GN and the movie is the frailty of men, even costumed crimefighters.

I give it 4.25/5. Rorshach, the Comedian, Dr. Manhattan, and Nite Owl II were all cast perfectly. I wasn't too crazy about Lori Jupiter aka the Silk Spectre II, but oh well.

Having read the original comics when they were first released, and waiting 20 years for the movie, I was pleased with the film.
Yes, it does have extreme violence, it has nudity, and it does have sex. All of which were in the original comics.
It also has all of the angst, anger, drama, and themes which raised the comic above the other material that was being placed on the shelves at that time. In short, all the things that go together to create drama. I've seen it twice now and plan on seeing it again this upcoming weekend.

Ginger, I do not belive that you were attempting to be ironic with the above question. Although, to me, it is a very much so. If you do some checking on the history of the character Superman you would be surprised at just how violent the character was in his original incarnation. He had no qualms about killing crooks using very gruesome methods. In fact with few exceptions many of the superheroes created in the 1930's were very violent individuals and if those early stories were to done as movies today the majority of them would be rated "R".

Khaine, no I wasn't being ironic :oops

I realised it's not intended by the maker for younger viewers. I suppose I was thinking that with so many 'supermen' type movies that are aimed at the young then some young boys would want to see this, not knowing about the whole history of the comic books, or what superpowers these people have etc. And they would sneak in (with most theatres you can buy a ticket for a PG and then walk into any movie) and watch it, not knowing really how bad it is.

I realise the people who made it could say 'well that's not our responsibility, our problem'. But did they really have to include a rape scene and have so much graphic nudity and sex in it, (I don't know how much violence or language was in it) to further the story?

I don't understand why movies have that stuff in it, for movies clearly aimed at adults (to me it's pointless apart from the Christian angle) but to have a movie with so many characters 'dressed up' in superhero outfits, have a smiley as their logo (yes as an adult looking at it, I know its dark, but would a kid get that?) in amongst so many superhero movies aimed either at kids or teens, is not wise, especially the rape scene.

I know it's a parents responsibility and thanks to Misfit here they are warned. But if a parent wasn't that into the history of this in comic books and just casually saw the smiley, or thought it was about a group of superpeople like fantastic four and never saw the previews of it - I doubt they would imagine all the stuff that was in it.
Or the casual person thinking it's just like Batman etc and ended up seeing it. Anyway I know I am in the minority, but it's a christian website so if I can't bemoan about the declining standard in movies today, where else can I do it ;)

tangent -
I make it a point to really research a movie and sometimes have to go to a few different internet sites to find out why it is a certain rating. But I get annoyed when I see a rating so small you can't even see it. I think all movies, previews, posters etc should have a big rating on it and tell you why. As sometimes I am out with friends, they say let's catch a movie - "x' is good. I may have never heard of it, am standing in the movies and can't find out what the rating is and why, quickly.

If you've seen the ads for the flick, the Smiley button has a blood stain on it. This should tell those who aren't familiar with the flick that something bad happens. The smiley button is the symbol of the Comedian, who views life as one sick cosmic joke. (You could call his philosophy of life nihilism.)

Agreed :yes Also glad I'm not the only one here familair with it. Allen Moore is an odd guy, but does some great work.
