I have a quartz countertop. If I pass electricity through it, it will vibrate.
If I connect "stuff" to it, my countertop could be a giant clock, right?

quartz is a very interesting thing: it's made of silicon, and dioxide, and silicon is also in sand. At surface temperatures and pressures, quartz is the most stable form of silicon dioxide. As the pressure increases the temperature at which quartz will lose stability also increases.
Sand in all over the place here. It has silicon in it.
Why not bind all the sand on the beach with dioxide? Why hasn't that happened?
"Dioxide" is a term that means something is bound to two oxygen atoms ("di" = two, oxide = bound to oxygen), e.g. carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, etc

if you squeeze a quartz crystal, it makes a tiny electric current. The opposite is also true: if you pass electricity through quartz, it vibrates at a precise frequency (it shakes about an exact number of times each second). they use quartz because of its unique piezoelectric properties. when voltage is applied to a quartz crystal, the crystal will vibrate, and when shaped like a bar or tuning fork it will hum at a certain frequency, depending on shape of the crystal and voltage applied.

quartz do this well because it absorbs almost no energy, making a stable frequency.

the watch will then have little amplified mics so to say, to pick up the hum of the crystal, when the watch knows the size, shape of the crystal and the voltage applied it can translate that into minutes, seconds, so on.
What would happen if I passed electricity through my kitchen countertop?

what your are calling that is called piezoelectric and cars use that alot. the knock sensor is one. this is used to tell if a cylinder misfires. and also the oil pressure gauge does the same thing but with a chip on it that measures the voltage produced and determines the signal to send to the guage.

i just wanted to clarify what you were talking about and to add all computers uses a quartz crystal to perform functions and to time then , ie when one is finished and another starts. its rated in hertz and called clock speed.if you cut up that quartz into to pieces both will pulse the same rate.

And, its awesome to think if you cut up a quartz crystal, all would vibrate the same.
Remember in the OT, where God says the stars sang?
Do you think the earth, and minerals like quartz, sing praises to God?
I know that sounds pretty far out, and wacko, but, the bible says the trees clap their hands,
and the entire UNIVERSE praised God, at one time.
Jesus said He could make the ROCKS praise Him, if He had wanted them to.
Maybe we can not hear what God hears, and that is, His creation praising Him.

The mountains can sing, the stars can sing, everything God hath made, can and does, sing praises to God, except for man!!
For now, I'm going to belive that the vibrations in quartz, which are so precise, were put there by God, for the purposes of praising Him.
I just think that's a LOVELY thought.

I mean, think about it. jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, the twelfth amethyst. And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, transparent as glass.

all of these were created by Jesus, who created everything, and today, a lot of the devil's crowd has perverted the beauty and purpose of crystals and rocks, making them something occult and devilish,
which is what the devil tries to do with all things God made.
If we get old, the devil tries to make us envy youth, if we have curly hair, the devil sells hair straighteners,
if we go bald, the devil has hair transplant clinics,
if we have green eyes, the devil comes up with blue contact lenses, ANYTHING TO GO AGAINST THE ORIGINAL PLAN OF GOD.
So, without getting involved in the occult garbage of crystals and such, what other crystals and minerals and rocks have properties like quartz? you know, that vibrate, or have some other unearthly property?

a knock sensor is a quarts crystal placed near a cylinder(s) that is calibrated to vibrate when a misfire occurs. it tells the computer that the engine has a miss and the ecm will either adjusting timing or see if it the cylinder fires at all. as other sensors can see if the gas is being burned and also tell the ecm where the engine is at and which cylinder should fire.

if it miss and its not correctable the ecm will kill gas to that cylinder and or fuel(both on some cars). and the check engine light will come on.
