Proclamation Establishing Thanksgiving Day

October 3, 1863

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle, or the ship; the axe had enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years, with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.

It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the city of Washington, this third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the independence of the United States the eighty-eighth.

I believe he and others were deists, believing in God of the bible, but not necessarily christian as to following Christ. However, both recognize a higher authority than themselves or other men.

Is it really necessary to go back and repost the voluminous quotes that are made that disregard any reference to a Christian beginning and in fact many founding fathers and other influential people not only had a disregard for Christianity but a strong disdain for it as well? The Monrow Doctrine plainly stated this country was not founded in any sense on the Christian religion. How could someone so close to the beginning have gotten it so wrong? I have posted just some of what Lincoln said , Jefferson was so disgusted by Christianity he rewrote the bible to suit his views. Washington was never witnessed to recieve communion and was a devout Mason which only acknowledges a supreme being. If in fact (it is not) there was so much intent for Christianity to be in our government then WHY did they PURPOSELY leave ANY reference to the bible and Jesus out of any founding documents? HMMMM????

Just ignore the fact that this country was founded upon Christian beliefs and doctrines, Rez. You can believe your god until the breath leaves your body; then you will have no doubts about my God.

a secular government is not institutionally antireligious. it's institutionally nonreligious. there is a difference.

Looks like we are to glorify the creator and give Him the thanks and worship due him as creator. Any other god besides the one described as creator in the book called the Bible does not qualify. The God of the Bible is the God being spoken of by the founders of this country. Anyone who studies the history of the United States will come away knowing this truth. How do you read it?
 
Solo good quotes from the founding Americans up there. But many still won't believe that this country was founded on Biblical principles. What a shame, what a waste of the soul.
 
I thought this was to be a historical view of Thanksgiving, so I will stick to that.

...In following years, many of the original colonists celebrated the autumn harvest with a feast of thanks. After the United States became an independent country, Congress recommended one yearly day of thanksgiving for the whole nation to celebrate. George Washington suggested the date November 26 as Thanksgiving Day. Then in 1863, at the end of a long and bloody civil war, Abraham Lincoln asked all Americans to set aside the last Thursday in November as a day of thanksgiving*....
And a little known tidbit on the Holiday, it seems that each and every President is obligated to proclaim which date the Holiday will fall.

The President's Yearly Proclamation

Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November, a different date every year. The President must proclaim that date as the official celebration. Here is an excerpt from President George Bush's Thanksgiving proclamation of 1990:...

*1939 President Franklin D. Roosevelt set it one week earlier. He wanted to help business by lengthening the shopping period before christmas. Congress ruled that after 1941 the 4th Thursday in November would be a federal holiday proclaimed by the President each year.

With all the posts purporting this country to be based on Christianity not one has shown anywhere that this country was founded on the bible God. So many Christians and not one mention of the bible or Jesus in the founding documents. Ever wonder why? I have shown repeatedly where this country was founded by Deists and Masons who acknowledged a supreme power but held Christianity in high disdain. The bible has no lock on morality and brings nothing new to the table in this regard. Most societies already had moral codes to live by and as I said many times before the bible mirrors Hammurabies Code which was written long before the bible and adhered too not the other way around.
