long hair?

'tis cultural.

I've learned that matters like that always have a reason. Something is sinful for a REASON. Because it's divisive, because it's destructive, etc etc.

Long hair is not destructive or divisive, except for the cultural preconceptions of certain individuals.

Well, I got my hair cut pretty short in March 2008, and haven't touched it since, so close to a year-and-a-half.

do you hear alot about, cutting your hair? how long is it?

I don't hear a lot about cutting my hair at college. Even though it's a Christian college, it's lax about stuff like that.

My church has become more lax in recent years too (though the pastor before the current one was one of the 'Can't be a Christian and a Democrat' sort of persons who preached against Pokemon). It's not too bad these days.

I plan to become a pastor myself though. I had an interview with my denomination a few months ago, and put my hair in a ponytail for the sake of professionalism, and I think I genuinely concerned the secretary.

EDIT: Hair is about 2.5 inches below my chin in the front (I have a long-ish face), and in the back, it's almost to the bottom of my shoulder blades.

being military i must keep it short, and while i have no problem with long hair and i do hear that it can cause headaches, my wife cut her hair and reduced the amount of migraines

Long hair is out, if you don't believe it at least look at the busts of the Caesars..

I don't. I would do it about once every 6-9 months if I wasn't doing dreads.

But as I'm doing dreads, I don't think it matters too much. I'll probably just get one final trim to even everything out and then go for it.

This can go on and on. I suppose you have to ask yourself the real question. If it is a shame for a man to have long hair, well how long is too long? Is it right above ear level? Is it below? Or is it at neck level?

I would stay away from the Pentecostals, the C's and Jehovah Witnesses-NO OFFENSE TO ANYONE

my mom and grandmother are Catholics so this slightly offends me, but not really, because my mom is such a gentle, loving and beautiful person with a heart that overflows with compassion and understanding. if she wasn't in bed sleeping, i'd go hug her right now :yes as for my grandmother, imagine a little golden-haired lady that you just want to squeeze in your arms all the time...!! she just radiates LOVE and AFFECTION :)

sorry, i just felt a random burst of love for these two wonderful, beautiful (inside and out) women. i should open a thread where everyone can pour out praise on the women they love most in their lives (mothers, aunts, grandmothers, step-mothers, older sisters, etc). Actually, I am going to do that right now! Thanks for your post, person I quoted above; you've reminded me how much I adore and appreciate these gregarious and big-hearted women in my life.

Hm...I've noticed people speaking against long hair on males because of its association with females and/or homosexuality.
Quite honestly, I don't think that should matter. Not every guy has long hair for those reasons.
I, for one, simply prefer long hair and always have. It feels more natural to me.

HEy,

I think there are more important things to focus on than a mans hair or a woman wearing dresses. Salvation does not depend on your hairs length. When I was younger my sister and I went to a pentecostal church and the pastor condemned my sister for wearing nail polish - he cast her to hell. If you go to a strict church you have to expect that. I think if you want to stay you have to be ready to hear more of that because it wont stop there. Sooner or later the pastor will tell you more things that you will need to change. Its all about loving God not religion, but if you feel comfortable being in a pentecostal church then by all means stay there.

Clean shaven is not how God made man. Short military hair cuts, that is not how God made man.

Why are the women being natural with not cutting hair but MEN are expected to cut hair? There is no logic in that. Pentecostals are quick to think their conservative american culture is the only one that maters. make up on women is acceptable but not on men, even though make up was used originally by both. What about Scotland where REAL MEN wear kilts.

Fashion, clothing styles and anything you where not BORN with, is all subjective. God made me with finger nails that will grow out VERY long unless i cut them, yet if i go to a Pentecostal church with long finger nails I will get looks and stares as if i pray to Satan. Its almost ethnocentric, " think what we think or you are wrong!"

Oh, I hate the "hair" rules that churches impose. I am an Apostolic Minister but I am not associated with an organization. The UPCI forces their members to wear long hair and wear certain dress codes. Why is this so? These rules are man made and nonbiblical. Why not let Paul tell us exactly what the churches are to think about hair. These are three verses from 1 Corinthians 11.

14Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

15But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

16But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

Paul has told us how he sees it, and his opinions on hair. But, the 16th verse tells us that there are to be no customs in the churches of God relating to hair. So, therefore God is not worried about your hair. And as far as dress codes go, Paul only teaches us to dress modestly.

okay guys enough with the Pentecostal bashing already, we are not one single belief system but a very broad spectrum of Christianity, I find it slightly offensive to be continually associated with such insane ideas and notions about hair, clothing etc, my Church is thoroughly Pentecostal and I have never heard anything of this spoken there before, we have dreadlocks and all manner of dress styles. I understand that some, perhaps even a good portion of Pentecostal Churches have become lost in regulation and religion but please realise that there are also a good number that have stayed true to our Azure Street origins.

I heard the story of a man who was a lifeguard. He was a nearly committed Christian who had long hair he read the passage in the Bible which says doesn't culture... I mean uh nature teach you that it is a shame for a man to have long hair?

We should know the culture and the historical background of the author but his argument is based on nature and not culture. he says it is a shame, not a sin. man looks at the outward appearance but God looks at the heart. Nevertheless, they guy read that it was a shame and had his hair cut that same day or week. His attitude was that he didn't want to be a shame. Many people try to explain away portions of the Bible as being "for that particular culture" this may be the case... yet it makes me nervous to do so because that's the first step of "picking and choosing" that we see many people apply to other areas of the Bible.

...with this being sayed we started talking about, why his church looks down on a man having long hair, and it started a debate, he doesnt have any scripture to back up what he is saying, can anybody back up what he is saying? maybe give me a few scriptures?

Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering.
I Corinthians 11:14,15

Finally the right answer about men and long hair, these pictures of Jesus wearing long hair are in direct contradiction to scripture, but alas so goes the world and those that love it.
