Viola's friend Shadou was hit by a car and killed on Saturday. I really don't have any details. He was 17 years old. This is the second boy that went to the high school to die this year. The kids are really reeling.
I've prayed for the family, the community, and Viola. What a tragedy for everyone to come to grips with. I was just having a conversation with a woman at work who lost a teenager about 5 years ago. It's taken her this much time to feel like she's back to some normalcy.
She told me something that really touched me. Since it happened, she felt like a tree that nolonger bares leaves. It's alive, but not "living". But she's recovering. Last year, toward the end of summer, she was taking a walk and saw a lush tree by some powerlines; you know how they cut a part out so it isn't touching them. And she had a revelation. God has restored her. She looks at her blessings; her husband and their daughter. She feels blessed. She's that tree that's full and alive, but there's that part that's been taken from her. That part that is a bit of a void, but she acknowledges that the Lord otherwise fills her branches with leaves, and she's grateful to Him for it. I thought that was beautiful.
I pray for a community of lush trees, even if they all go on living with branches cut away.
I'm so sorry! Asking your teen to pray with you can help them build the habit for themselves and open them up to the comfort and solace that a relationship with God can bring. It's so easy, especially when we're young, to turn away from God and everyone who loves us when we are sad and close ourselves off from love out of fear. God will always be there waiting for us to learn a better way.
