Two questions really;

Do you think playing the lottery is intrinistcly wrong and unchristian?

Would you vote against your church accepting a thithe or offering coming from

lottery winnings ?

The 11th Commandment is "Though Shalt Not Buyeth Lottery Tickets" dontchayknow...

I see no problem with a lottery ticket now and then. The problem is when the lottery is your obsession. Those people who buy like 20 tickets a day and run their bank account into the ground have a problem. An occasional ticket isn't bad.

Same goes for casinos. A few pulls at the slot machine is ok, but a couple buckets of coins and a day of mind numbing lights is not so ok.

And I see no problem if a tithe comes from someones earnings from the lottery or a slots machine or the craps table or anything else in a casino. Money is given to us by God, God likes when His money is reinvested back into His church.

Also I see no problem with a weekly poker game among friends or Christian brothers. 20$ buy ins and a good night of friendship never hurt anyone!

Proverbs 13:11 says, “Dishonest money dwindles away, but he who gathers money little by little makes it grow.” Before someone uses this against lottery, I must say I do not see the lottery as dishonest money, sure it dwindles but so did your allowance that your mother gave you ever week, was that money dishonest (ok no jokes here...)?

i wouldnt play the lotto and i dont feel that its wise.

as its more likely to get struck dead by lighting then its to win the lotto.

why not invest that money elsewhere that you play with.

I don't think it is a wise use of our resources to go around buying chances, so as a Christian, I would have to wonder what the motive behind it is. However, I know very fine believers who will buy a ticket in the Heart and Stroke Lottery in order to support the hospital.

As far as a church accepting a portion of winnings, that decision should be made after prayer and meditation. My first instinct would be that it would be wrong, but if it was from a lottery where a great charity was benefiting, I think that the Lord would require a tithe. However, I really don't know what to think, to be honest!

We knew a Pastor from the New Orleans area .... Lets just say his family had 'connections'. The word was put out a person needed a large amount of cash...
The next day a brown paper bag of $$$$ was on the porch.

The pastor said It was God's money to start with and the devil had had it long enough. :yes

I think it comes down to where your heart is. Playing the lottery means you pay out an investment in the hopes of gaining a return.

How is that any different than the investment I pay out every year when I spend the time and money working my soil, buying and sowing my seed, fertilizing, and controlling weeds all in the hope that the weather will cooperate and not be too dry, too wet, too cold, too hot, destroy it with hail, destroy it with wind, etc. and then hope the price doesn't fall out of the grain market when I harvest. This past summer I was within just four miles of a disastrous hail storm that left soybeans looking like rows of twigs. The summer was extremely wet and my crops looked terrific but I had to wait nervously for things to dry out as it was an exceptionally wet summer, especially around harvest time. Fortunately, we eventually got them done but it was questionable for a while.

Do you put all your hopes on the gamble, risk your family's welfare or your own, and place your success or failure ahead of God?

Lotteries are for people who cant do math, and like contributing their earnings to government revenue they are like a voluntary tax for the people.

a small govt aussie on this forum? wow, and that is the truth what you said.

The wise words of my first ever accountant at tax time

i have seen people of welfare spend two bucks a day on the lotto hoping to win, yes i could stand outside my house during a storm with a lightning rod and have more chances of 'winning" then the said welfare reciepent.

I do buy gambling things occasionally but only at food raffles when there is not many people and lots of prizes at a club or something. The chances a re fair there, but that's about all i do.

I know my first post here was a negative one but from my experience in hard times those lotteries look appealing but they are not a good plan.........unles you win which is very unlikely. I would l think there wil be air conditioning and refreshments served in hell before I could win something like that.
