Isn't it interesting that the first term Paul uses to describe love is the word Patient.
Let's be real with ourselves for a moment. Many of our cultures teach us that love is getting what we want when we want it. In the states, love is not patient, it lusts after the first person that is found to be desirable. In the middle east, love is not patient, it is arranged to assure current family security. Our world wants more and more of Love, and yet it does not even know where to start.
Patience or long suffering suggests that love is something that waits. It is not a bad thing to wait for love is it? Wouldn't we all want a love that is patient with us? However, we learn as we grow in wisdom that patience is not something we can give away with ease.
When we are seeking a raise, patience is not easy. Bills still come due. Car's still need repairs. Medicines still need to be bought. Necessities are not free, just necessary. When we add all these factors into seeking that raise, patience is the last thing we learn. If this is true of wealth which is something we can influence with our efforts, it must only be more true with our romance, something that requires mutual patience to work!
So are you looking for love? Start with patience. Work at it as much as you would when you seek that raise. What you will learn is that love is lastly described by Paul as enduring all things. You don't appreciate a raise if you've never endured hard times. Why would you want a love that you never had to learn what it would be to appreciate it?
Just some thoughts late this evening.
