Love your enemy as yourself. How is that possible?

Matthew 19:24 But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” This passage says that only God can accomplish this.It therefore becomes possible for those who give their lives to Jesus Christ. We are suppose to pray for those who persecute us.

You don't have to be their best friend, but pray for them. Pray Gods love, comfort, and favor over them. And don't dwell on how they hurt your feelings.

You know the saying "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer". :)

Remember if you think hating your enemy or seeking revenge will accomplish anything -

Pro 24:17-18 KJV Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth: (18) Lest the LORD see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.

I think it requires some special anointing.

Special anointing for what? Loving your enemy?

for some it does. corey tin boom had to pray for the strength to forgive her rapist. she did it and still felt disgusted by being near him. but she did it. she was honest and said I followed the command and I was blessed by doing so but I still don't like him. would you be best friends with the man who killed your children?

For me, it has often helped to recognize and consider the reasons behind my own reactions to things others say and do. This takes some doing, and a bit of reflective practice. But, before long, you start to extend some understanding compassion to others when you see yourself in their negative actions.

Doing this, you can usually find it easier to believe that they might have just been protecting their own emotional vulnerability in a given situation, rather than simply trying to put you down, or lash out in defiance.

The commandment isn't "Become best friends with your enemy". I'm capable of treating my enemy with respect. I don't need to become his best friend.

delineate respect. I can hate a man and not go after them. I have done that. one man in the national guard was over me. I wasn't rude to him nor disobeyed his orders. so through his corruption and lies at times. yet I wouldn't undermine him, just knew what he did to me and others and the chain above him knew.

he was told to retire, and few miss him. when he left the guard I didn't attend his retirement party. I know he is on fb, I haven't posted hate about him there nor trolled his page on the unit. in fact I joined it. I still don't like him but I don't seethe like I did. this man cheated on his wife with the gf of a man overseas.

Yea. Because it sounds so strange. Its just like Eating the venom that kills or storing it in a drinking cup. That's why it takes the power of God in our lives for us to successfully love our adversaries.

That's a strange one. It is not easy at all. If you don't like him then...would it be right to say the other way around that you hate him? Dunno.

Perhaps the right word for your case, Jason, (the anti soccer man lol), is "you are indifferent towards him." Perhaps I'm wrong

there are people that wont like us but don't hate us either. some people are just jerks and not easy to get along with. sometimes they go to church with us. sometimes gasp, god saves them and is working on them.i can come across as that to some.my sarcasm isn't also liked.

its not that im anti-soccer. I have played in middle school and did play it a lot as a kid. it just that I don't feel the need to go ga-ga over it. most sports that many have watched and like. I played as a kid on a street. many americans were that way. there is a field. that was in the trailer park that I grew up in that we used to play football, soccer, baseball, and and kickball and stick ball.

So you believe that it is only through God's involvement in our lives that we are able to forgive and love our enemies?

I personally don't believe that.

That's the work of the Holy Spirit - precisely. Think about loving the man who rapes a five year old girl. Can the girl easily love this man?

I believe she could get to a place where she holds no animosity toward that individual.

God's not saying we have to become best friends with our enemies. When He says "Love your enemies", what He's actually saying is "Don't hate them". Pray for them, forgive them, don't let their animosity toward you give you cause to stumble. Let it go, put it behind you, move forward.

Luke 9
62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Regardless of the transgression, we can't hold on to those things and expect the Lord to give us a clean bill of health.

Matthew 6
14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
