Luke 1:13-17
King James Version (KJV)
13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
Luke 1:13-17

13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will give him the name John. 14 You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. 15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and he will drink no wine or liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while yet in his mother’s womb. 16 And he will turn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God. 17 It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to the children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

13 This is common opening words from an angel while giving a message because if we are in fear we will not hear the message they way we are meant to hear the message. The angel knew his name, this was a personal message. They must have been praying constantly about having a child. God will always give an answer to our prayers but it will not always be a yes. So like many others in the bible the child is given a name from the Lord, Isaac and Jesus was to other examples of this being done. He would become known as John the Baptist.
14 Having a child often brings a joy to a parent’s heart but with John, I think he may have brought more joy since he was filled with the Spirit.
15 John would be the priest that God called to come before Jesus. John would not touch wine vow men such as Samson was meant to kept, yet Samson did drink, John would not. John would set the path for Jesus to come. John was filled with the Spirit in his mother womb, Mary was filled with the Spirit in her womb and Jesus came out, this is the difference in these two cases.
16 John brought on a reveal. John prepared people for the Lord’s coming and made them ready to hear His message. Jesus said “no greater man has ever lived than John” referring to John the Baptist.
17 John paved the road for Jesus’ coming; they would have not been ready for His coming; without John the Pharisees would have not been fearful about anyone coming with a message, this would lead to them wanting Jesus’ death which allowed for the Resurrection. God used John for many things and he was very important.
