Luke 1:18-20
King James Version (KJV)
18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

18 Zacharias said to the angel, “How will I know this for certain? For I am an old man and my wife is advanced in ]years.” 19 The angel answered and said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. 20 And behold, you shall be silent and unable to speak until the day when these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.”

These are my thoughts, please share yours.
18 He spoke back to the angel, he had overcame the fear he had but not due to faith. He lacked the faith to believe of God sent by the angel to him. We may not get a guarantee. This also was the cause with Abraham and Sarah. Abraham in fact asked them exact same question. He would have known the story of Isaac’s birth and how God had preformed the impossible by allowing the birth of Isaac when Abraham was very old as was his wife. Knowing things does not always make things easier even with knowledge we may still have doubt.
19 Gabriel was one of the few angels that scripture gives a name to. Michael, Gabriel, Lucifer are the only ones mentioned by name. Gabriel stood in God’s presence this showed he was very important and a high ranked angel. Gabriel often came to bring a message from God. He does again with Mary. This was the beginning of the transition from the age of the law to the age of grace. The good news is Jesus dying which John would ready the road for Him to travel and it was very good he was born because he had an important role.
20 This was the sign it was also a punishment for a lack of faith. We should need a sign. This would a least be a 9 month time of being silent due to his wife not yet being pregnant. We will see the signs of we truly have faith.
