Bible Study Luke 5:24-26

Luke 5:24-26 King James Version (KJV)
24 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.

25 And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.

26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.

Luke 5:24-26 Revised Standard Version (RSV)

24 But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the man who was paralyzed—“I say to you, rise, take up your bed and go home.”25 And immediately he rose before them, and took up that on which he lay, and went home, glorifying God.26 And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen strange things today.”

These are my thoughts, please share yours.

24 Sickness was seen as a result of sin so for Jesus to say He had the power to forgive this man’s sin but without him walking the people would have not believed his sins were forgiven. So Jesus wants this man to walk a man that may have never even stood.

25 Today we know that after a period of not using legs training is done to strength them so you can walk again, this man instantly was able walk under the power of Jesus. He now had a story that would amaze everyone and news would be spread about Jesus from him.

26 They had not seen anything like this, when we receive the Spirit and come to Jesus by faith do we jut stand in amazement like these men or do we get up and walk telling people about what He had done for us.

It was an old fashioned testing by midrash.

A debate of sorts. Every one came to watch.

They doubted Jesus'authority to speak as a schmeekah rabbi.

Then Jesus proved he was God.

Simplistic answer to their doubt. But dang...what a way to prove it.

Your understanding of the passage is thoughtful and correct. At the core of the issue is faith. God, never having been a bully would not have forced the man to glorify Him, He has the power to do so but that is not the nature of God. But remember the Bible, the first thirty-nine books of the Christian Version, and the God breathed twenty-seven Life Application Commentaries tie together better than any Dove Tail Joint made by the finest carpenter in this world.

By the time Jesus was born of Mary the Jewish Faith was in serious trouble, much as is the case with Christianity today. People then would pray in populated places that they might be seen and people today go to this or to that assembly hoping they will be seen on the TV.

In the first century, there had been about a four hundred year period where no miracles had een recorded and God had not had a prophet to come forth with His "word for the day" for the people. In the twentieth century we saw the falling away from the Church of our God.

The people, listed, on the Church Rolls attend for a variety of reasons and a double blind surey of the Christian Church Universal, taken in the mid-eighties demonstrated the lack of faith among the people, generally, considered the Church Faithful. The Faithful were certified as such by their Pastor for attending services at least three times a week.

That cross doctrinal survey was taken double blind to maximize the honesty and I will suggest that some unknowable factor still lied. The questions were yes or no as I am given to understand and were only concerning the Basics of Christianity.

The questions were such as, "Do you believe Jesus is returning to take you to Heaven?" Another would have been, "Do you believe in the Virgin Birth?"

Of that ten to fifteen percent of the Churches, less than two percent believed the basic tenants of Christianity. Extrapolate that out into the Sunday Morning Worship Service and there, seated on the Pews is a very frightening illustration of the condition of the Chruch today. There are less than two, perhaps less than one in every hundred people there that are saved.

The Church and the Synagogue were built on faith. The Blind Man saw because of faith. The Lame Man walked because of faith. People inside the Church today are not healed for the lack of faith. But I digress, I did not mean to steal your string just to preach a bit

'Strange things' because they were under the same illusion as Job's friends that God rewards the righteous with wealth and health in this life.

What these scriptures boil down to is Jesus was teaching in a crowded room about forgiveness of sin.The Pharisees called Jesus a blasphemer for they knew only God could forgive sin, but they had no clue that Jesus had all power and authority from God as being the Son of God. These men that stood outside believed in what Jesus was teaching and by their faith in Jesus since the room was so crowded they lowered the paralytic down through the roof to where Jesus stood so he too could be forgiven of his sin. When Jesus told the man that he was forgiven of his sin Jesus also healed him at the same moment as Jesus told him to take up his bed and when he did he stood and gave glory to God. Jesus gave witness of the power and glory of God that was within Him given by God.

Sickness was seen as a result of sin so for Jesus to say He had the power to forgive this man’s sin but without him walking the people would have not believed his sins were forgiven. So Jesus wants this man to walk a man that may have never even stood.
The verse immediately before the one where you began clarifies the passage.
Luke 5:23 Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Rise and walk'?
Anyone can say, "Your sins are forgiven." There is no way to prove that they had been forgiven or that they had not been forgiven. There is no observable evidence of forgiveness having taken place which would verify the speaker's power to forgive sin.
There is very clear evidence that someone did or did not have the power to heal an man who was paralyzed; if the man got up and walked then the speaker had the power to heal him. If he didn't get up and walk then the speaker did not have the power.

So, it's easy for some charlatan preacher to say, "Man, your sins are forgiven you." But if he says,"Rise and walk." you'll know right away if he's got the power or not.
