Are we all really made for a purpose??? What purpose?
Please give examples.

I will ask the rest of my question after your reply. Thanks!!! :wave

As an ex-catholic I will give you the catechism response:

Why did God make you?
God made me to know him, love him and serve him in this world and be happy with him for ever in the next.

That was the standard wording learnt by rote in the 1940's but it may have changed.

My own answer is 'No'. We are not made for a purpose, I think that is just arrogance on our part.

The purpose is simple. He created us to love and to love Him back,to enjoy His creation and the life He gives us,to show His love to each other and give Him all the glory and then ultimately to praise Him for all eternity- because He is worthy. Every human has a that purpose, but not every human has that destiny.

Thanks. You really came close to that part that bothers me. I will reply soon.

Gen 1:27

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

He desired sons, He wanted to reproduce Himself, yet there needed to be a process by which a "son" could be tested. Thus we have the "temporal" realm of this world. Where God may draw from this realm that which He will keep in His Eternal realm.
We now have through Christ the ability to become "sons of God" and be comformed to His Image. So then by His "First Son" He has begotten "many sons"!:wave

"...to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good." (Titus 2:14 NIV1984)

This is what it's all about, Alfie.

This is the perfect will and purpose of God for those who want it:

"...love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control..." (Galatians 5:22-23 NIV1984)

"...compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience..." (Colossians 3:12 NIV1984)

He wants a whole race of people that look like this. And that is how human history will culminate.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

Part of the purpose of our creation is to walk in the good works that Jesus would have us do. Loving God with all our heart, soul and mind and loving our neighbors as ourselves is the place to start when considering what "good works" are being talked about.

Thanks. Can you make it clearer?

We humans tend to think that we are the most important creatures in the universe and 'therefore' we 'must' have been created for a purpose. After all, 'God must have a purpose in everything he does', but I'm afraid I don't buy it.

The obvious arguments are simple things like - what is the purpose for mosquitoes, spreading disease and misery? What is the purpose of crippling diseases, birth defects etc etc? We often just dismiss those with an acceptance that God 'must' have had a reason but we simply don't and can't understand. We can't hope to understand the 'reason' for polio for example.

Humans are a bit further up the evolutionary chain than diseases and mosquitoes but the same questions apply. We can't hope to know the 'reason' so we invent one which gives us a more important place in the universe - which equals arrogance in my book.

As pretty obviously a capable thinker yourself, I am assuming that you do not just have an unthinking acceptance of Genesis which was of course only suitable for man's scientific knowledge of 3000 years ago.

The non-Christian view is a very sad one. And, no offense, but I know you don't accept the Bible as authoritative. Nonetheless, it is the Word of the One who made you. Read what He has said about you.
Galatians 4 NASB
7 Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.
Discovering your destiny, who you are in God and what exactly you were made for is the mark of an active and mature Believer. Our Christian walk is full of special divine moments that only we can fulfill but there is a much greater vision for our lives that only He can fulfill. By seeking daily His purpose for our lives are we best able to learn and discover the many miraculous things we can do through and with His name.
Psalm 139
3 For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother's womb.
God made you for a unique and special purpose and it is up to each and every one of us to lean into God and His word to discover what we are here for.
Matthew 17
20 And He said to them, "Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you."
Faith will Always Win Out. God made us to be a Body of Believers who both overcome obstacles and this world. For with God we can do all things.
Jeremiah 15 "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations."
Even before we were born he knew us and set us apart to go great things in His name. All we have to do to fulfill our destiny is to listen to that still small voice of the Holy Spirit as he prompts us to deed and action.

I appreciate all your replys. Thanks a lot. Danus and Aardverk actually came close to the question I have in mind.

But before I proceed I will try to answer Aardverk's post.

Some of the replys in this thread www.christianforums.net/showthread.php?t=45187 address your post. Just go through the thread. See post #8 in the link (there's hope, like Tim says: creation will one day be restored as it was intended to be

Back to my question!
We are made for a purpose - I agree. But how justified is this statement. I was made to do the will of God. For me alone? For everyone.
This incident should make my intent clear:
My neighbor (that was ages ago) flirted, got pregnant. She was discouraged from committing abortion. She was a teenager. I think she was 14 or thereabout. She labored with the pregnancy and finally gave birth to a baby. You know what happened? She killed the baby after she gave birth to her. [My God...that was wicked of her. It could have been better if she had done it while she was still pregnant... They are both murder tho.. I don't justify any of such acts].

Was this baby also made for a purpose? For what purpose was this baby made/created? What role did he/she play in the world? Was her role to be murdered by her frustrated murder? Was her role just to take her/his first breath and then cry and die?

This brings me to another conclusion that God actually created Adam and Eve and said to them be fruitful. Human beings today only respond to God's instruction of 'be fruitful and multiply'. I don't think we should blame God for the death of this child. Did God create the baby to just be born and be murdered? It is our decision to have babies - thus obeying 'be fruitful and multiply'. Free will! The mother could have chosen not to get illicitly pregnant.

Then how is this baby made for a purpose? Sorry for my ramble.

Again, Moses didn't enter the promised land. Moses was made for a purpose? He served the people but didn't serve himself. We know how he ended.

This brings me to Aardverk's statement. For what purpose were these people made: an aborted baby, a baby that died after birth, a person that suffered sicknesses and died, a deformed man who doesn't know what's going on in his environment, a down syndrome, etc etc etc. Made for a purpose? What purpose?

I know some of the replys would be: sin in the world. I know this. But for what puropse were these people made? (especially the baby....the baby was born sound - no diseases - but was murdered.)

"Are not two sparrows sold for a penny ? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father." (Matthew 10:29 NIV1984)

Just because we can't discern the purpose of something which to us looks meaningless, random, and purposeless doesn't mean there is no meaning, no order, or no purpose being fulfilled.

I think it very short sided and narrow minded to think just because we can't figure something out there must be nothing to figure out. I say it's terribly arrogant of us mere mortals to think that. So I don't do that anymore.

When I can't understand why something is the way it is, or why something happened the way it did, I remember the verse above. God knows. I do not.

In his wisdom, Solomon found the conclusion of the matter. There's a judgment coming...and, well, that's pretty much all that matters, because everything we know in this life stays here and vanishes with this age, so live for what matters after this life...even if it costs you this life. I've made that the guiding 'philosophy' of my life. It's the only one that makes sense.

The question assumes that there is only purpose in this life.

Agree...simple yet very deep...I have but one life to live here in this world. Will I live in honor of the One who has the Power to make all things right in the end? May I live this life without fear, without hate, and according to His Will that is within me.

A lot of things do happen...they get me worried. I should stop getting worried. Several years ago a woman took in (that was after many many many years of barrenness). She gave birth to a baby. On the day of the child's dedication..the pastor happily raised the child up unto heaven. Tragedy! He forgot there was a ceiling fan hanging down the ceiling...You know the rest.Well...It is well, we are encouraged to always say.

The process of natural birth cannot produce any child of God. See Jn. 1:13 and Rom. 9:8. Each naturally borned person to be a child of God must first be born again of God to be classified as a child of God. Your term "He created us" is not correct.

For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. - Colossians 1:16

That verse says it all, it may not be what you are looking for, because your not in control of your purpose. If your purpose is anything else, then it will fail.

For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames. Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? 1 Corinthians 3:11

We each indeed have a purpose, that I am so sure of! It's very important to seek God's face and ask Him what His will is for your life. I do this often as God never tells me the whole picture, only where to step next. This keeps me focused on Him.

And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his host, and the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD.†And they did so. - Exodus 14:4

In God's Word there are even times where it says this person was created for His glory by rebelling against Him! Wow, over and over God says He hardened Pharaoh's heart just to prove His glory! Some of you guys are asking things that we'll never be able to understand. Through the suffering of pain it can lead us to Christ and/or prove His power and glory! I can relate as I used to be a drug dealer till God saved me in a radical way! Then, I shattered my leg in a motorcycle accident SO God could heal it for His glory! And it was a radical miracle as well.

God will not force people, keep that in mind. God also gives curses from generation to the next. The child being born of that mother was his curse. Though I believe the child will get a chance to choose whether to accept Jesus or not as some verses reflect this, but we'll see. All in all I know His ways are higher than ours.

We each have a purpose, we each have a so called destiny that only we can fullfil through Christ. No one else can fullfil it for you. I want to stand at the end of my life with a reward that has been tested through fire, and built upon the foundation of Christ. All things that are done without His will being put first, are burned away.

For those that aren't sure about their being a living God. "Seek and you shall find". I can promise this as God isn't trying to hide Himself from you, just the opposite!

Revelation 4:11You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for you have created all things, and for your pleasure they are and were created.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world.

1 John 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us.

Acts 15:14 . . God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name. As Abraham in Genesis Chapter Twenty-four sought a bride for his son Isaac from among his own people, God is doing that today among us.

Revelation 3:9 . . I have loved thee.

Hebrews 2:6 But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him?

Jeremiah 31:3 The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.
