Martial arts pros and cons

I took Ish Iyn Ryu for several years. Mostly, it was self defense techniques, balance, and principles to remember for fighting.
We did not meditate, worship Buddha, or anything like that. We did bow upon entering the dojo as respect for the sensei. There was no mysticism about it. It seemed to be a very practical form of karate. Yes, karate or martial arts does give one self confidence or knowledge about one's abilities. The students in our dojo were very friendly. No one had a bad attitude or EVER went looking for a fight.
As far as I'm concerned, training simply gives one confidence. Much like school gives training for particular careers. When you encounter the job, you have confidence that you will perform well.

I smell McDojang.

What is the base? A mixed style has to have a base to be any good, the yin yang makes it Daoist not satanic but Daoism is a philosophy of man influance by Satan.

The "base" of Hap Do Sool is conditioning and practicality.

There are tons of people in martial arts that would get there butt kicked in a street fight. Hap Do Sool teaches flexibility of technique as it includes Boxing, Aikido, Wrestling, Gymnastics - Tumbling, Forms, Yoga, Kickboxing - IT IS A COMBINED MARTIAL ART.

I visited a hapkido school and found a huge Buddha on the wall, all the students HAD to bow to the buddha and use meditition.

Bowing is a form of respect for seniors, not worship!

I understand the eastern view on this topic, however, most westerners really don't understand. When you face shomen you often find a bottle of wine [yum] and a bowl of rice that is offered to the dead. This is out of respect for the departed, it's offered to make the dead happy. The Bible doesn't allow for this.

We bow in my dojo, I also make sure people coming in the door understand what bowing means. Soma, how long have you been training in MA's, how much time have you spent visiting dojos and seeing the practices of different dojos and dojangs? How many hours do you have training in the dojo to understand the practices of modern budo?

IT IS A COMBINED MARTIAL ART.

MMA is combined MA. I personnaly believe ju jitsu and wrestling are the two most basic and important of all MA. Both are neutralizers and can take away the strengths of your opponent. While both are necessary I would rate myself as a striker first and foremost because everyone knows that there is a lightswitch on the chin if you hit it hard enough. Muay tai (knees and elbows) does the most damage, but fists and kicks are also effective. All these things are dependant on strength training which makes positioning your opponent easier. And one of the most important is cardio training, like they say... 'it doesn't matter if you have the fastest car in the world if you don't have any gas in the tank'.

Your not serious are you????? :-?

have you ever been to a typical Christian funeral????

More money is wasted on flowers/casket/service/ then many people GROSS in a year.

At any rate, what is so unBiblical about showing respect for the dead? Have you ever saw a picture of Saint (fill in here) in Mass or a picture of Luther in the front of your Bible?[/b]

You make some good points Soma. I think the food offering is only a problem if we were to take part in it knowingly. My feeling is what others do is not representative of me.

Lev 19:28 Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.

There seem to have been a problem with them memorializing the dead, I'm assuming the above verse is about tattooing something in memory of a dead person.

Not to mention....

Luke 9:60

Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."

But at any rate, you obviously should show SOME respect for your dead relatives. I mean look at how the Kings in the Bible were treated at death.

But as for me.... Just throw me in the backyard on a bornfire and call it a day, save some cash for the LIVING..... (of course that is illegal here)
