Martial Arts

Anybody feel free to jump in; open for discussing any and all Martial Artsy things!

-----------------------------

"It's Shotokan. Yes, I very much agree, I think we've lost something (O.K., alot of something!) by watering it down and turing it into a fitness or philosophy class, kid's club, or even a sport... :shame Don't get me wrong, I think starting young and keeping active and mindful is great, but there is (or was anyways...) more to it than that.
I'd certianly be interested in hearing any tips you might have on making it a little more true to life (probably best discussed elsewhere though)... I'm just realizing now in China the kind of shape my Karate was in! :nono2

---------------------

i thought so. i did a shotokan variant called ryokakai karate-do. i am a shodan. but i dont do it anymore. here its as i stated sport or philosophy.the hombu dojo is too far to be worth it for me and my old sensei is retired.

mma is more my thing.

what is your favorite kata? i liked sei pai, and also goju shiho-dai, and saiuchin. basai -dai i hated and also sanchin and the naihanchi series.

well for first. i would say look at what the attacks are and adjust the training to them.this means do more on knife stuff or ground game! "

---------------------

Thanks for the pointers! Both could certainly use some TLC. I'm not sure I know enough to have a favorite kata yet, but if I had to choose one from the few I know, perhaps Heian Nidan. I'm also feeling a little partial to our union's Jo kata (unique to the union), though I haven't learnt all of it yet.
Any weapons you prefer(ed)?

On another note, as I learnt tonight; steel nunchukus vs. nose - take my word for it, bet on the nunchukus. :bigfrown Haha...

MMA? Hmm, I can certianly see the appeal... most martial arts today are perhaps not as comprehensive as they were originally intended to be...

the problem with nunchakus is well you cant carry them legally in all 50. i wonder why.:lol

heinan nidan? that is the first kata.hmm i would like to look at the bunkai of that.first of what is your rank?

on bo and jo. i prefer the filipino way of those. they use sinawali drills and its a better way to learn the use.

Hello, and hopefully you are doing well;

Yes, I've heard tell of the Phillipinos/nas and their stick fighting. Haven't really seen it yet it however.
Heian Shodan is first, but you're close - 2nd. Must have been a while?
I'm second purple, which in our union translates to pretty much smack in the middle. I've been practicing for 5 years, but it's been realtively on and off. As I mentioned, when I return to Canada I think I've got a fair amount of work ahead of me...
Yes, the Nunchukus are illegal in Canada too, so I'll leave them behind when I return, but it's been great to get to practice with them here. Suffice to say the foam ones don't really compare... :shame

Until next time!

it goes like this in ryokokai karate-do
pinan ni dan
pinan sho dan
pinan san dan
pinan yon dan
pinan go dan
and then the naihanchis
one of these for shodan(bbelt)
sanchin
saeuchin
hangetsu
sei pai
basai dai
gojo shiho dai
nijo shiho

i had to know all of them by nidan(my dojo converted to ryokakai karate-do).

Ahh, I see I see...

Heian Nidan + Drills [Orange]
Heian Sandan + Drills + Kumite [Green]
Heian Yondan + Drills + Kumite [1 Purple]
Heian Godan + Drills + Kumite [2 Purple]
Tekki Shodan + Drills + Kumite [1 Brown]
Tekki Nidan + Drills + Kumite [2 Brown]
Tekki Sandan + Drills + Kumite [3 Brown]
Bassai Dai + Drills + Kumite [Red]
Black Belts:
Kanku Dai + Weapons [1st Dan]
Jion + Empi + Kanku Sho + Weapons [2nd Dan]
Hangetsu + Jitte + Gankaku + Chinte + Ji In + Bassai Sho + Sochin + Nijushiho [3rd Dan]
Wankan + Meikyo + Unsu + Gojushiho Dai + Gojushiho Sho [4th Dan]
After that it's experience (measured in years) as an instructor...

Also, apologies to any Filipinos/nas - not Phillipinos/nas... my bad! ;)

ok, no ippon kumite? jute/jitte a form that i am unfamilar with. no offense you art seems to be more of a kata primarlily with little on actual useful stuff. i have been there. the hombu dojo has went that way for my system. i dont find ippon kumite totaly practical. it has its place like kata , but there has to be a way of training for the real thing without injuring oneself.i like judo/bjj as you get to actually use chokes and locks and the guy resists and you learn that maybe the way it is in the street. its not perfect as these are sports but chokes and locks arent as fearful as before.

btw being good at self-defense is a journey not a destination. too many art rely on 100 plus yr old ideas.

Hey again jasoncran;

No offense taken. I agree that our union does not nessisarily give us a good grounding for actual fights, but I believe that this comes more from our "family friendly"-ness and preparation for scoring points in tournaments than from over emphasising the Katas. (eg; despite the fact that crosses, hooks, etc. are all useful and legitimate Karate, nobody's really taught them to us as it is the staight punch that scores points) Hurr...
We may very briefly touch on something like ippon kumite in our "Kumite Sessions", but as I said, very briefly.
Don't get me wrong, our Sensai knows his stuff - really knows it, but either I'm not learning it as I should be, or part of the union's priorities are elsewhere.
This conversation has been very enlightening; thank you...
As for the 100 plus year old ideas, I've no problem with those, it's when they get watered down and turned into a sport or performance that I am starting to see issues...

i do and i dont. the problem is the old karate-do does work but.. it takes a while to get good and keep in mind that modern karate is meant to be a philosophy more so then anything . read up on gichin funakoshi and what he says on the purpose of kata. another problem is that all arts these days(save the more progressives and mma) assume the guy isnt trained. that isnt a luxury these days.

I teach my boys too.
