I have a question that I feel is legitimate. I'm not a very big fan of listening to straight up praise or gospel music, but I do enjoy listening to bands such as Skillet and Red who have been classified as Christian rock. Now, are these bands deemed "less Christian" because they don't directly come out and say "Praise God?"

Part of me is uncomfortable with listening to praise music, especially around some of my other friends - and that's a problem with me and my need to grow in my faith, but I also truly enjoy the harder Christian music. I'd just like to hear thoughts on this.

I don't believe they are "less" Christian since either they are Christian or they are not. But I know what you mean. The message is there in the lyrics but it is much more subtle than praise music. Both styles of music have their place - praise is more for believers and the other for non-believers. I think that bands such as Skillet and Red reach those who otherwise would not be reached.

Another good thing with these types of bands is that they address everyday issues and struggles, things that non-Christians can identify with, and that is so very important. Saying "Praise God" is not something that non-Christians can identify with. Skillet's and Red's lyrics are full of messages of hope despite feelings of hopelessness - "Savior" and "Breathe Into Me' are two great songs.

Personally, Mute Math, Blindside, Red and Project 86 are my favorite, most listened to bands, although I do listen to worship music as well (Gregorian Chant included). I will say that I think it is very important as a believer to listen also to worship music, even if it is just when you are alone. It is a good practice to fill your mind directly with the praises of God, just as it is essential to read the Bible and pray every day (not that I am great when it comes to that).

Thanks for the response free. I think I'm going to have to work on listening to some more praise music. Both my brother and my parents seem to always have that on their car stereos

You said that you don't feel right listening to praise music around your friends ? Well that sounds like you are ashamed of the Gospel. You need to pray about that' because Jesus said. If you be ashamed of Him' He would be ashamed of you before the Father which are in heaven.

Just a quick note to say that Project 86 has a new album coming out in a week - June 19th - called "Rival Factions". :-D

Lewis has made a good point jonathan, I hope you are thinking deeply and praying about it.

I just saw this thread. I've always been on the "lookout" for bands and lyrics that go against the grain of popular secular pop culture, whether that wave a Christian "flag" or not.

One of my favorite bands is Switchfoot. 8-) They are a band worth embracing. Check out their website.

Lyrics are more important to me than the music, although I am quite picky when it comes to the music. This is why I love Red, Blindside, and Project 86 (who also had a second "album" come out on Nov. 25 last year but only on iTunes US. ). Switchfoot is good too although I don't have any of their latest stuff (never mind, I just got two songs--"Stars" and "Meant to Live"--from iTunes).

Aah, great songs, from two great albums. Pick them up Free, you won't regret it. ;-) I'm listening to "Nothing is Sound" as we speak. It's a dual disc; the CD and a DVD, which is "The Making of...".

I just purchased "Reset and Rewind" by Manic Drive last night on iTunes. They rock! There is one song I don't care for lyrically but the rest are quite good. Check them out on myspace.
