Mother Nature

Humans are fond of attributing personal characteristics to impersonal objects. Mother Nature simply takes this phenomena to a much broader scale. Or were you trying to be funny?

Hi; Tgalwk: While it can sometimes be used just as a figure of speech, it can also be carried to the extent of linking it to mystical religions and the eco-environmental lobby and their politician friends that are always wanting to put taxes up and up.

Hi Tgalwk,

Mother Nature is the idol that people refer to in a vain attempt to provide an excuse not to believe in God. We might look at the weather and say everything is natural, but God is omnipotent. Does that mean we should understand why things happen the way they do? No. To attribute what happens here on earth to omnipotent chance, and not God, only serves to harm that individual.

- Davies

I think people refer to it as "Mother Nature" rather than "Father Nature" because of how moody the weather can be.

Um, who on earth is she? I hear people always referring to her in regards to weather ect.:chin

Who is Uncle Sam? I have often referred to my truck or other machinery as "she" or even given them names but there's no who involved. Just a figure of speech to me.

It is called 'Mother' nature after one of the many earth goddesses, not least 'Terra' of course.

Before Zoroastrianism started the idea of there only being one God, there were far more female gods than male. Even Zoroastrian offshoots such as Judaism had both male and female gods until the male priests started their successful movement for male domination of religion.

It has taken thousands of years but we now have priestesses appearing again in major religions. I wonder where that will end? :chin

(Earth goddesses: Achthonian, Ala, Arinna, Asase, Ya, Asintmah, Aysyt, Beira, Bhūmi, Cel, Coatlicue, Diti, Erecura, Etügen Eke, Gaia, Ila, Iusaaset, Jörð, Khaltesh-AnkiKi, Kishar, Libera, Liluri, Litavis, Lurbira, Mat Zemlya, Mefitis, Nantosuelta, Nerthus, Ninhursag, Onuava, Ops, Ot Ene, Pachamama, Papa, Papahanaumoku, Pele, Phra Mae Thorani, Prithvi, Rangi, Shala, Sif, Spenta Armaiti, Terra, Tlazolteotl, Toci, Tonantzin, Uras, Yer Tanrı, Zemes-mãte, Žemyna, etc)

I agree with Davies. Personally, I'd bet that it would be a stretch to think that even 1 in a million people have ever even heard of the goddess you speak about, Aardverk, much less know anything about her, him, or it. I call trolling.

I don't know if what Aardverk is doing is trolling, considering there are plenty of obscure gods and godesses that many of us have never heard of. Has anyone done a google search on what they are suggesting?

Good day mate,

I shouldn't say that if I'm not from Australia, should I? My point I was trying to make was the idea of there being one God did not start with the religion of Zoroastrianism. The idea of Mother nature most likely started before the Tower of Babel or during that time. Everything outside of the revelation of God that Adam and Eve were given is an off-shoot of the truth. So, we can safely say the revelation of there being one God came from Adam and Eve, and in a lesser degree, we should understand there is only one God by our conscience. It's the corrupt conscience that believes there is more than one God. For Aardverk to say that Judaism is an off-shoot of Zoroastrianism is nothing but a provocation. To be fair and to give Aardverk the benefit of the doubt, he said what he said because he's trusting another source of information other than the Bible, and he's being sincere. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. He knows what Christianity teaches.

Aardverk, why did you say the idea of there being one god came from Zoroastrianism?

What?!? This a joke - right? Did I spell it wrongly? Er, no, I just double checked and the spelling is right. What on earth is the problem? Perhaps you need to look it up? Anyone who has taken even vague interest in the history of religion will be aware of Zoroastrianism.

OK, assuming that you are both serious, and I am still not sure that you are, let us try to work out the first religion that proposed that there was only one God (Zoroastrianism is the religion, their God's name is Ahura Mazda).

Christianity came after Judaism so that's not the answer - is it? Christianity is only 2,000 years old.
Judaism actually had four Gods way after Zoroaster stated that there was only one God - so that's not the answer.
Zoroastrianism was started somewhere around 6,000 BC (8,000 years ago!), Judaism only really got going around 1,000 BC (3,000 years ago), but it is vague - so again, that's not the answer.

Wikipedia says: "The ancient roots of Judaism lie in the Bronze Age polytheistic Ancient Semitic religions, specifically Canaanite religion, a syncretization with elements of Zoroastrianism and of the worship of Yahweh reflected in the early prophetic books of the Hebrew Bible." That has been my understanding for many years. I can see no errors it that statement - do either of you?

So, I am completely puzzled and not a little disturbed by your responses. I would be VERY interested to hear YOUR opinions on which religion was the first to suggest that there was only one God. References to Adam and Eve do not indicate any religion that they followed - so that is not an answer. They had no religion.

I see nothing provocative about discussing ancient religions or false 'gods' under the heading of 'Mother Nature'. I gave what I believe to be a factual answer and made no attack on any one or any thing, certainly not upon Christianity. I did not promote or advocate any religion, I am guilty simply of educating you. It would be rather nice to receive an apology!

If this was a joke by both of you, well done, you got me there!:gah
