Muslims can't listen to music?

I was looking around the internet to get Muslim perspectives, and I was curious about what they thought of music, and most responses say it's all evil. Anyone know how true this is?

I beg to differ. In my country, Muslims are very talented in music, especially Rock. The Asian Idol winner is a Muslim. Most of the Idol contestant finalists are Muslims. Even in their Ramadan fasting month, they never give up their singing passion. The winners of the Idol competitions have been consistently Muslims. Even the vocal trainers, and music and dance instructors are Muslims. There are some Muslim to Christian converts in my church that are in the worship team. And in case you are wondering, no I'm not from a Muslim country. On the contrary, the Muslim population where I live is only about 10% ... !!

Mainly curious from what I found off a Muslim information site.

“And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the path of Allaah…†[Luqmaan 31:6]

I found the link, but it's on a Muslim questions and answers site, and I don't know if that is against forum guidelines. I've looked through this article, and it says that musical instruments and singing are forbidden.

To be fair though, it does seem like this is most opinion, and he does not have a lot of support to justify some of his claims.

Truth is, I have never met a single Muslim who actually reads the Quran. Some don't even own one. It's true. They say it's confusing and difficult to understand. The 5 pillars of faith and 6 doctrines of Islam are all that some of them know, but even then, they don't bother to follow it. Most of the Muslims in my country are educated, modern and non-religious. I find it hard to believe that if the Quran verse of Luqmaan 31:6 was to be interpreted to mean that music is forbidden, then the Islamic religious leaders in my country are not doing anything to stop so many Muslims from excelling in the area of music and the arts. It could be interpreted that way in the Arab and other strict Muslim countries where women don black from head to toe exposing only the eyes. Maybe you should seek answers from Muslim forums as I don't see how this topic is relevant and related to Christianity.

I have a couple of Muslim friends, and we all enjoy music thoroughly. I must agree that most of them claim that they have not read the Koran because it is difficult to understand. They mostly follow religion through their religious leaders and word of mouth.

Bells, Satan, and Dogs

Muslims definitely do not like bells if they are obeying Muhammad. From the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, we have the following quotes:

Quotation 1 -- Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger as saying:Angels do not accompany the travelers who have with them a dog and a bell. Source - Sahih Muslim Book 024, No. 5277

Quotation 2 -- Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger as saying: The bell is the musical instrument of the Satan. Source -Sahih Muslim Book 024, No. 5279

Quotation 3 - Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab: Ibn az-Zubayr told that a woman client of theirs took az-Zubayr's daughter to Umar ibn al-Khattab wearing bells on her legs. Umar cut them off and said that he had heard the Apostle of Allah say: There is a devil along with each bell. Source - Sunan Abu-Dawud Book 34, No. 4218

I just posted this on four Muslims forums that I have membership with:

Does Islam forbid Muslims to listen to music, play musical instruments, and sing?

Should be interesting to find out what some of the responses are ....

I have a feeling that the Muslims are allowed to listen to music, play musical instruments and sing, without any conflict with their religion ...

One of the Muslims forums has a separate section for the Muslims to share their favorite music! So that says something right there ....

I will share some of the answers when they began to appear on the various forums ...

Is Music Also an Issue of Ikhtilaaf?

Well ... as I expected ... the answers are coming in, and lots of them! But as you will see for yourself, the Muslims themselves are having a difficult time answering the question, "Is it ok for Muslims to listen to music?"
