On the tattoos thread, someone that seems like a great guy seemed to say he had heard that putting in an earring is supposedly mutilation.

(Better to have any such discussion on a new thread rather than on the same one.)

Personally I think this argument is very, very far fetched.

Though I guess people who are of a legalist disposition have got to find some kind of argument in order to force their attempts at restricting other people. But anyway...just my two cents'.

PS: What I would say, however, is that young people should obviously be discouraged from giving themselves their ear piercings, because a needle or gun stud needs to be sterile. Having figured and decided who's paying for it (!), parents might be advised to take teens in person to have it done, to make sure it's done properly in clean and sterile conditions.

Tattoos are an obvious form of mutilation and God used it as away of branding and punishment. However piercings were common during his time; I believe when women got married they acquired nose rings, and ear piercings were a sign of the slave. Regardless of their actual meaning piercings were common on women, so i guess for men it would be sinful because men and women aren't supposed to wear things that are meant for the opposite sex.
