My oldest brother

humble soul

On Sabbatical from Rome

My oldest brother had a profound influence on my life.
There were times he humiliated me, that I've taken a while to forgive. But he has mellowed now, and is actually quite humble.
Books. He had an awesome bookshelf. All those penguin classics with mysterious authors like Balzac and Nietzsche. Has taken me a lifetime to catch up. I never will.
Music. He had some awesome records. Like Bridge over Troubled Water. RY Cooder. Gordon Lightfoot.
He was a talker. An interesting talker. I never understood what he was saying. That made it all the more mysterious.
I'm finally uncovering the mystery. He is the most interesting guy in my family. Sorry to other members. It's mainly the books he had.

The only problem was the pedestal I put him on. Afraid to have a different view to him. If he disagreed with me, I must be wrong. At times I just adopted his view, and assumed others were wrong.
I was afraid to forge my own views. But as JP says, you have to take the risk in saying what you think. You make mistakes along the way, but that's how you learn . Like learning a new language. Just open your mouth and practise the language, even if you sound like an idiot.

Their are eight of us kids and each one of us are unique in our own thoughts, views and interest and one thing I have learned is to let each one have them and not to argue or debate them like they do. this gives me peace of mind when I am around them.
